President's Message
Annual meeting July 6 will change four board seats, bring new president to the helm for SPJ Cleveland
Kaye Spector - high res
Kaye Spector

Hi everyone,
This is a bittersweet column for me ... my last as president of the Cleveland chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Next week, Chris Mosby will take the reins as the new chapter president.
Several new members are nominated for election to the board next week. Members are all welcome to join us at Panera on Rockside Road in Independence on Wednesday, July 6 at 6:30 p.m., to cast your votes for:
  • David Campbell, sports manager for cleveland.com
  • Michelle Simakis, an editor with GIE Media
  • Jackie Mitchell, an editor with ScripType Publishing
  • Joe Ginley, sports broadcaster and St. Ignatius
    High School's sports information director
Ginley
Campbell
Simakis
Mitchell

These four will replace outgoing members Rodney Bengston, Stan Bullard, Rich Exner and Holly Hammersmith. Each of these people has made solid contributions while serving on the board, and I'm grateful to have worked alongside them. Stan, a senior reporter for Crain's Cleveland Business, has been on the board for 29 years, since 1987. He won the Distinguished Service Award in 2014 for his many years of outstanding service to the chapter.

I'd also like to single out Rodney for a special thanks for his service to the chapter over the last few years. Rodney served two terms as president, agreeing to an extra stint after there was an unexpected resignation. While he was president, he oversaw a relaunch of our social media platforms, including our Facebook page and website -- the latter redesigned by Rich, whom we will miss greatly as well as Holly, a professional blogger who was a great help in revamping our online presence. Rodney also helped to connect our chapter to a sponsorship with the Cleveland International Film Festival and introduced a new type of event - a meetup - for our chapter. He traveled to regional conferences, national conferences, and represented the chapter at countless events and in a number of committees.

Being president is a demanding position, but I have enjoyed the work because of the tremendous opportunities for networking and professional development. Plus, I've met some great people.

We start looking for new board members every spring. If you're interested in serving - and I would strongly encourage our members to consider it - contact me or one of the other board members.
Best,
Kaye Spector
