Preparing for the RNC program June 22 will focus
on the right to record and photograph in public

Kaye Spector - high res
Kaye Spector
Hi everyone,
As the Republican National Convention draws near, we are starting to see lots of activity and programming connected to this once-in-a-lifetime event for our city.

The Cleveland Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is getting involved, too.

We are partnering with the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation (the philanthropic arm of SPJ), the National Press Photographers Association and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to present "Preparing for the RNC: The Right to Record and Photograph in Public."

The event is designed to help reporters, photographers, videographers and journalists understand their First Amendment rights to record events in public.

But those rights don't just belong to journalists.

With the ubiquity of smartphones and everyone's ability to share information through social media, the information will be valuable to most anyone planning to take part in some aspect of the convention.

A panel will explore such questions as whether police can confiscate or seize images you've recorded or order you to delete them. Journalists on the panel include WJW-TV videographer Chris Reece, and visual journalists Lynn Ischay and Joshua Gunter from cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer.

They will be joined by attorneys Gregg K. Leslie, legal counsel for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and Michael K. Farrell of Baker Hostetler.

Cleveland Police have agreed to be a part of the panel, and will be represented by public information officer Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia and Sgt. Shawn Smith, officer in charge of the Cleveland Police Academy.

Moderator will be attorney Mickey H. Osterreicher, general legal counsel for the National Press Photographers Association.

Our chapter leaders are excited to present this program and the valuable insights we know our panel can share.

The event is from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm Wednesday, June 22, at Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. The event is free, but space is limited, so we ask attendees to reserve their seats.

Make your reservation here.
Hope to see you there!

Hoynes wins SPJ's Distinguished Service Award,
Lasso gets Porter Scholarship at City Club lunch

Paul Hoynes speaks after receiving the DSA, as colleagues and family listen at head table.

Cleveland.com sportswriter Paul Hoynes was presented with the Distinguished Service Award from SPJ Cleveland luncheon at the City Club on Ju
ne 8. A 30-year veteran of the sports beat, Hoynes was honored for his exceptional career, which now has him covering the Cleveland Indians for cleveland.com

"Baseball is the toughest beat to cover. So many games. So many personalities. So many chances to tick people off with what you say about them," said sports columnist Bud Shaw, also of cleveland.com, in introducing his pal "Hoynsie."

"It's night after night on deadline. There's no clock. The day begins in early afternoon and stretches past midnight if all goes accordingly," Shaw continued. Yet despite the long hours and exacting beat, "Paul is as driven today as he was the first time I saw him, to get the story in on time and get it right. That isn't easy when the story you've spent all night writing changes in extra innings with a single swing of the bat."

At the same event, Amherst Steele High School senior Gretchen Lasso was presented with the Phillip W. Porter Scholarship. Chapter President Kaye Spector presented the award, noting that Lasso faced tough competition among the finalists for the $1,000-a-year, four-year scholarship, which is awarded annually to a graduating senior who plans to study journalism in college.

Lasso wowed the judges with her broadcasting experience and an investigative series she did with a team of of students on teen alcohol abuse. Spector noted that Lasso was well aware, going into the series, that it would not be popular with many of her fellow students. Yet she believed it was important an important role for journalists, to investigate and discuss the situation.

"Producing her story on teen alcohol use was incredibly challenging because Gretchen and the three students in her group knew what the backlash could potentially be. As one student said, 'The entire student body is going to hate us,'" said Mark Lowrie, Lasso's journalism teacher at Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst. Lowrie was unable to attend the ceremony but sent his praise for Las
so in an email to the scholarship committee and chapter executive.

"Her story is being shown on the LCADA (Lorain County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services) website, Gretchen was invited to
show her story at the STOP Task Force, and the story was also showed at the Teen Alcohol Town Hall Meeting at our school."

Lasso will begin Kent State University's program in broadcast journalism in the fall.
