Distinguished Service Award goes to Paul Hoynes, Porter Scholarship to Amherst senior Gretchen Lasso

Kaye Spector - high res
Kaye Spector
Hi everyone,

Recognizing and promoting outstanding work in journalism is a major part of the Society of Professional Journalism's mission.

Our annual Best in Ohio awards promote good work, as do two other very important awards: the annual Philip W. Porter Scholarship and the Distinguished Service Award.

The DSA is the highest honor the chapter can bestow for service, and is given for a long career of exceptional work in the field.

I'm pleased to announce that longtime sports writer Paul Hoynes is the board's choice as recipient of the Distinguished Service Award this year. "Hoynsie" has been the Indians beat reporter for The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com for more than 30 years.

Our Porter Scholarship is awarded annually to a high-school senior who demonstrates the skills and desire to enter our profession. The student receives $1,000 every year over four years. The scholarship is named for Philip W. Porter, a long-time Plain Dealer editor who was one of the co-founders of the Cleveland SPJ Chapter. Past winners of the award are listed on our website, at the Scholarships tab.

I'm pleased to announce that our 2016 Porter scholarship winner is Gretchen Lasso. Gretchen will graduate this spring from Marion Steele High School in Amherst, and is headed to Kent State this fall to study communications.

Our chapter will honor Hoynes and Lasso at a luncheon on Wednesday, June 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at The City Club of Cleveland, 850 Euclid Ave. #200, Cleveland 44114.

Lunch, included in the admission price, is served at noon; the awards program begins at 12:30.

I'd like to publicly thank the committee members who helped to select the Porter scholarship recipient: Paula Slimak, Cliff Anthony, Betty Clapp, Carrie Buchanan, Tom Moore and committee chairman Anup Kumar.

This group met at Cleveland State for two Saturdays this spring to decide on finalists and then interview the top three candidates. Our board is grateful to the scholarship committee members who so generously gave their personal time to this.

Finally, keep an eye on your email in the coming days for a very special announcement about an important event we are planning for later in June!

SPJ Excellence in Journalism Conference 2016
Get ready for journalism in The Big Easy
Every year, SPJ awards scholarships to help members attend the Excellence in Journalism national conference. This year the conference will be Sept. 18-20 in New Orleans. If you're a SPJ member who qualifies, be sure to apply for one of the following scholarships by June 5.

Columbia Journalism School Student Fellowships
The Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism is providing SPJ with scholarship funds to assist five SPJ student members from any school to attend the conference.

Robert D.G. Lewis First Amendment Award
This award was created to honor Robert Lewis, SPJ President 1985-86, National FOI Chairman 1978-83 and Wells Key Recipient 1980.

From the generosity of the Lewis family, the award is given each year to a student SPJ member who has demonstrated outstanding service to the First Amendment through the field of journalism. The award assists a student with his/her attendance to SPJ's annual convention.

Dori Maynard Diversity Leadership Program
SPJ works to promote a broader voice for diverse journalists in newsrooms across the country, and to expand the depth and quality of news reporting through better sourcing.

Diversity efforts are just as important within the SPJ membership as they are in newsrooms and in reporting. Strengthening SPJ's diversity membership representation is important to the organization's health and future. The Dori Maynard Diversity Leadership Program is an opportunity for members to become more acquainted with SPJ through exposure to the Society.

Terry Harper Memorial Scholarships
SPJ will award scholarships to the Excellence in Journalism conference in memory of Terry Harper, SPJ's executive director from 2002 to 2009. With a generous outpouring of support, the Society can now proudly provide scholarships to SPJ members to attend its annual convention.
