Vice-President's Message
Come and join us to watch Spotlight

Chris Mosby
Kaye Spector
Film journalists sometimes get a bum rap. That particular medium tends, all too often, to think of reporters as convenient villains or sleazeballs to be overcome by the protagonist. At best, we're portrayed as sweaty, poorly dressed and dim-witted. At worst, we're unethical schemers out only to advance our own agenda. The list of films and television shows that cast journalists in these poorly drawn archetypes is sadly expansive. (Think, for instance, of the TV reporter in Die Hard whose unethical work nearly results in John McClain's death.)
That at least partly explains why the Oscar-winning film Spotlight is such a revelation (and relief). The film stars Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Liev Schreiber, Brian d'Arcy James and Rachel McAdams as the reporters and editors who earned a 2003 Pulitzer Prize for their unearthing of a widespread child molestation scandal being covered up by the Catholic Church.
Wonderfully, none of the portrayals is gimmicky or descends into caricature. Each actor brings humanity and complexity to the role. They ably portray the lives of real journalists: the often thankless work, the long hours, the difficult interviews, the ethical dilemmas and the drive to do meaningful work. It's a moving, thoughtful movie and an inspiring (true) story. At its core, it's a celebration of journalism and what journalists can accomplish. It's also an argument for the continued necessity of investigative journalism.
If you haven't seen Spotlight yet, or if you would like to watch it again with fellow reporters, we'll be holding a free, public screening of Spotlight at the Parma-Snow Library Branch on May 25 (next Wednesday). The movie will start promptly at 6:15 p.m. and we'll have a short discussion after the movie. We might even bring some popcorn.
Due to the size of the venue, attendance is limited to 30 people. So if you're interested in attending (and we hope you are), please RSVP via this link.
See you soon!
