Writer's Week
July 26, 2015
Deadline for next edition Aug. 9

This edition, we launch a new look for Writer's Week: a mobile-friendly design that updates our appearance and accessibility on different screens and fits with our new website design. We hope you'll let us know what you think. You'll find the familiar features are all here but you'll need to scroll down to find them. The events summary, which includes programs offered by various local organizations as well as SPJ, is now in the middle and the jobs are further down, with internships and fellowships beneath them. The links above, including "Coming Events" are to our own, SPJ Cleveland material on our website.

President's Message
Kaye Spector - high res

I've just completed registration to attend SPJ's Excellence in Journalism annual conference in September in Orlando, Florida, and I couldn't be more excited.

The conference draws broadcast, print and digital news professionals from all over the country to attend the workshops, training sessions and career fair. About 1,500 are expected to attend.

I'm looking forward to going for a number of reasons. It will be exciting to attend such a large gathering of journalists and I look forward to meeting other journalists while brushing up on my writing and editing skills.

I'm also excited to represent Cleveland at a number of meetings, including the Installation Banquet, in which the Society's highest awards are given. Ohio belongs to SPJ's Region 4, which has racked up a number of awards this year.

Interested in attending? You don't have to be an SPJ member. (But you do have to pay a little more. So why not join SPJ before registering?). There's also a way for large groups of people, such as newsrooms or classes, to sign up at the same time.

Early bird registration ends Aug. 4., so there's still time to sign up (but not much!).

If you plan to attend EIJ15, feel free to shoot me an email so we can connect in Orlando.

Web Designers' Workshop Set for July 30 at Cuyahoga County Branch Library

The Cleveland Digital Publishing Users Group, a non-profit organization providing educational information about digital publishing, will present a workshop for web designers on Thursday, July 30, at the Maple Heights Branch of the Cuyahoga County Library system, located at 5225 Library Lane in Maple Heights.

Offered free to members and $10 for guests, the workshop and will be lead by Norm Friedman. Friedman will devote time to writing issues of particular interest to designers, such as correct capitalization of titles, maximization of subhead effectiveness, and tips on making photo captions compelling. He will also highlight some of the most common errors in word use, grammar, and punctuation and leave plenty of time for questions.

In more than 20 years in the nonprofit sector as a writer and communications director, Friedman routinely teamed with designers and printers on projects ranging from newsletters, invitations, and brochures to annual reports. That continued to a degree when Friedman began to work independently, but lately he has been specializing in his writing workshops and individual coaching. He posts weekly writing tips on his blog: http://www.normfriedman.com/blog/.  Friedman earned a B.A. in psychology from Miami University and an M.A. in communications from Ohio State. He has been published numerous times as a freelancer.

While an RSVP is not required, it is strongly encouraged. Food for the workshop is ordered based on number of RSVPs received.
