Distinguished Service Award for 2015 goes to Debora Lee of NewsChannel5
It's that time of year again to honor one of our own for a job well done.
This year, the Cleveland Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is honoring Debora Lee, who recently retired from WEWS-TV, with its Distinguished Service Award.
Lee spent 26 years at the station, and I am sure will have good tales to tell at our luncheon scheduled for noon Wednesday, May 20, at the Cleveland City Club.
We also will be presenting this year's Philip W. Porter Scholarship to Samantha Harris from Brunswick High School.
So it will be a day of the celebrating the past and the future of journalism.
We hope to see you there.

Debora Lee, our 2015 Distinguished Service Award winner, was a reporter at NewsChannel5 in Cleveland for 26 years before retiring in April.
During that time, she won numerous awards, including a National Headliner for her reporting on the community's fight to save St. Michael Hospital. In 2008 she was inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in Akron. Other awards and honors include the National Association of Black Journalists' 2000 Journalism Award, an Emmy, the WV Associated Press Award, the Adoption Triad Advocate Award for reporting on adoption issues and the Community Shares Power of Participation Award for reporting on women's addiction issues.
Lee will be presented with SPJ Cleveland's Distinguished Service Award at a luncheon May 20 at the City Club of Cleveland. The same day, we will present the Phillip W. Porter Scholarship to an up-and-coming journalist, Samantha Harris of Brunswick High School. We'll have more to say about the highly accomplished Harris in a future Writer's Week. The Porter Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding high-school senior to study journalism in college.
Tickets to the luncheon can be ordered online here.
Lee completed a master's degree in journalism and mass communication from Kent State University in 2011. Her undergrad degree is from West Liberty University in West Virginia.
Her broadcasting career began in radio in the late '70s in West Virginia. She moved to television and WTOV in Steubenville in 1984, where she was a reporter, anchor, producer and assistant news director.
During her time at NewsChannel 5, Lee focused on education and covered many stories on the topic.
Lee is currently an adjunct professor at Kent State University in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling with her daughter, Candace, and cheering on the Cleveland Cavaliers.
