Our "Police Force and the Media" program planned for Wednesday at John Carroll University could not be more timely.

With the events in Ferguson, Mo., and the Tamir Rice shooting in Cleveland and 2014 Department of Justice report highly critical of the way Cleveland police operate, there are plenty of issues to be discussed.

I won't list everyone on the panel for this program (see related article below) , but I will say its diverse makeup should ensure for a lively discussion.

So I urge you to come with your questions and comments to Wednesday's event.

Program April 22: Police Force & the Media

The November 2014 Department of Justice report, the Tamir Rice shooting, the Michael Brelo trial and the Williams-Russell shootings, all point to serious problems in the way Cleveland Police use force and handle complaints about its use.

Our upcoming program will examine the issue - and media coverage of it - from four perspectives:
  • Cleveland Councilman Joe Cimperman, member of council's Security Committee, which oversees the Cleveland Police
  • Northeast Ohio Media Group reporter Ryllie Danylko, who covered the Tamir Rice shooting and  stories related to the DOJ report
  • Law student Chris Esparza-Rivero, who filed a complaint about police brutality that he experienced
  • Columnist and radio host Mansfield Frazier, who has done a series of programs on this issue
Moderator: Carrie Buchanan, a John Carroll professor of communication, worked for 15 years as a reporter and editor, 12 at the Ottawa Citizen, the major daily in Canada's capital. She is a member of the board of SPJ Cleveland.

When: Wednesday, April 22, 7-9 p.m.
Where:  Lombardo Student Center Conference Room
John Carroll University
1 John Carroll Blvd.
University Heights 44118
