President's message
We are Charlie - nous sommes Charlie
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

The news out of France about the killings at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo reminds us how dangerous journalism can be in other countries.

Journalists on U.S. soil can face dangerous situations here, but I am guessing it is rarer for them to face such deadly consequences.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists website, there were 70 journalists killed in 2013 where a motive was confirmed. There were another 26 journalists killed in 2013 without a confirmed motive.

The website also listed the deadliest countries for journalists in 2013 as Syria, 29; Iraq, 10; Egypt, 6; Pakistan, 5; Somalia, 4; Brazil, 3; Philippines, 3; India, 3; Mali, 2; Russia, 2; Bangladesh, 1; Columbia, 1; and Libya, 1. Unfortunately, France will be on the list for 2015.

Here's hoping we find more ways keep journalists - and everyone else - out of harm's way during 2015.
