President's message
Act now to stop Ohio legislation
affecting reporting on death penalty
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

Ohio House Bill 663 would make it harder for journalists to report on death penalty cases.

SPJ Region 4 Director Patti Newberry outlines the specifics in her blog post at this link

And journalists need to keep a close watch on this 'Secret Executions' bill because it is possible that a vote could come as early as Wednesday.

The way the state handles executions, Newberry eloquently argues, needs more scrutiny not less.

If we allow state legislators to pass the bill in its current form, government is given way too much leeway on what information it can withhold.

Newberry's blog post outlines various steps she thinks journalists should take with this bill. It is an important issue that needs your attention.

Brian Bayer and one of the children he worked with last year in Ecuador
Brian Bayer and one of the children he worked with in Ecuador

John Carroll University graduate Brian Bayer needs your help to raise funds for his investigative journalism initiative, Project Mundo.

Bayer, a former managing editor of The Carroll News and John Carroll's student-run TV-4, was a year-long volunteer, after his graduation in 2012, with Rostro de Cristo, a volunteer and retreat group immersion program in Guayaquil, Ecuador. During his time there, he wrote a regular blog and used social media to tell the world about that project. He wants to go back to Ecuador, this time as a journalist, and is trying a crowdfunding website to help finance this project.

Upon his return to Ecuador, Bayer aims to work with Sister Annie Credidio, the founder of a hospice care center for patients with modern-day leprosy (known as Hansen's Disease) to investigate and report on her organization, The Damien House. He will be helping her compile 23 years of journals into a book for the Loyola Press. He also plans to work on a project to spotlight social issues in Ecuador and wants to explore the dynamics of life in impoverished invasion communities.

Bayer is currently within $1,000 of his goal. For  more information, visit the project's website, or donate here.

Bring your courts coverage experience to one of the premier court reporting jobs in the country where you'll have the opportunity to cover a beat that has regularly produced high-impact, high interest news. On this beat, you will cover all key stories about criminal and civil cases in the Common Pleas courts of Cuyahoga County, in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the largest court system in the state, with dozens of judges handling cases every day. You will report on indictments, trials and sentencings by writing, creating videos, and posting across multiple platforms including all relevant types of social media. You will come into the role ready to be a digital leader, particularly in social media, and already trained in the use of all relevant platforms. We are looking for someone who can capture the incredible "stories behind the stories" of the cases that move through the courts, and who will stay on top of newsworthy happenings.
