May brings spring flowers, but it also means that is time for the Society of Professional Journalists Cleveland Pro Chapter to hand out its Distinguished Service Awards.

This year the chapter is honoring Connie Schultz, a nationally syndicated columnist for Creaters Syndicate and a regular essayist for Parade Magazine.

It also should be noted that she has a 2005 Pulitzer Prize for commentary for columns that judges praised for providing "a voice for the underdog and underprivileged."

The Distinguished Service Awards honor those who have made significant contributions to journalism.

Besides Schultz, the chapter also will honor longtime member Stan Bullard of Crain's Cleveland Business for his service to the chapter.

Both awards will be presented at a May 27 luncheon at the City Club of Cleveland. More details and a registration link will soon follow.

OHIO SPJ AWARDS COMPETITION

Honor the Best of Ohio's Print, Broadcasting, Online, Trade, College Journalism

This is a CALL FOR ENTRIES to the Ohio SPJ awards competition: Ohio's Best Journalism.

Entry information and a list of categories is available here.

Ohio's Best Journalism is presented collaboratively by the Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland Pro Chapters of The Society of Professional Journalists.  It is the only Ohio competition that honors journalists who fulfill the SPJ mission: defense of the First Amendment, support of literacy, resistance to censorship, advocacy for openness of public records and meetings, media self-criticism and community service. This program also recognizes the best college daily and weekly newspapers, and awards up to $2,000 in scholarships for excellent student writing in news, features, sports and opinion.

DEADLINE: No entries will be accepted after 4:29 pm, May 2.

ELIGIBILITY: Journalists are eligible who work for newspaper, magazines, radio, television, trade, online and college media in Ohio and adjacent states that have significant reach into Ohio. Entrants need not be members of the Society of Professional Journalists. The work must have been published or broadcast in 2013.

FEES: A $30 entry fee must accompany each submission, except for college students, who pay a $10 entry fee for writing of news, feature, sports and opinion. College newspapers may enter for free. You may submit any given article in as many relevant categories as you wish. Submissions from trade publications, newsletters and other print alternatives are welcome. This contest is for journalists in the state of Ohio and immediately adjoining states whose publications / stations / work have significant reach into Ohio. There is a $5 discount per entry for work by SPJ members.

SPREAD THE WORD: Please forward this message to anyone you think would like to participate in Ohio's Best Journalism contest!

An easy way to pay and budget your dues

Tom Moore

Many SPJ members - me included - have been guilty at one time or another of letting our membership lapse.  Now, the Society of Professional Journalists has come up with an easy way to take care of your membership so that it never runs out.

SPJ now has an option in which you can pay your dues on an automatic monthly basis, through a credit or debit card.  Instead of paying your national and local dues once a year, you can now arrange to have them paid on a monthly basis.

No more renewal notices coming in the mail.  No more having to make a $95 payment when money may be tight.

To get started, call Sarah Beck at national headquarters, 317-927-8000, ext. 212.  Tell her you want to pay your dues on the monthly plan.  Please have a credit or debit card ready.  There is a $5.00 annual fee for the plan, making your total $100.00 for a year ($75.00 for national dues, $20.00 for chapter dues (don't forget those!) and the $5.00 administrative fee).  That $100.00 is then divided up into 12 monthly payments of about $8.33 per month.  It'll be automatically deducted from your card on the last day of each month.

Of course, if you're a student, retired or an associate member, the total amount will be different.

Going to the monthly payment plan is probably one of the smartest decisions related to SPJ that I have done in my 20-plus years of being a member.  There's no more forgetting to pay, and budgeting is so much easier.  Give it a try and you'll agree with me.
