Seeking members' input on name change
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

Is a name important?

When it involves a professional group of journalists, I think it is.

The Society of Journalists is pondering a name change to the Society of Professional Journalism.

All SPJ members are being asked to weigh in with their opinions. The issue was debated at the recent SPJ convention, and drew some passionate arguments from both sides.

And even if the changes happens, it will not occur overnight because things like letterhead and the website will have to be changed.

There is an online survey (click on the underlined words to go there) for SPJ members to offer their takes on the issue. I would urge everyone to take the survey. We want the issue to be decided by the many, not the few.

On another note, it was nice to see a good crowd at the recent Communicators Holiday Party. Included in the crowd were myself and seven former SPJ Cleveland chapter presidents.

We will be back with more programs in 2014, but for now I would just like to wish everyone a festive holiday season.

2013 Sigma Delta Chi Awards
open for nominations until Feb. 7
The Sigma Delta Chi Awards in Journalism are now accepting submissions.

Submit your entries online.

Submissions must be received by Feb. 7. Pieces must have been published or broadcast in 2013 to be considered. The awards are open to any U.S. media outlet or international SPJ members. Entries not originally published or broadcast in English must include an English transcript or subtitles.

For more information on submissions visit the Sigma Delta Chi Awards webpage.

Winners will be notified in April and honored at a banquet at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. on June 20.

The prestigious Sigma Delta Chi awards began in 1932 when SPJ honored six individuals for their contributions to journalism. The current program began in 1939, when the organization awarded the first Distinguished Service Award, which eventually became the Sigma Delta Chi Awards.

Take a moment to review the work of previous winners of the Sigma Delta Chi Awards.

Please contact 317-927-8000 or awards@spj.org with any questions.

Foodies! Send ideas to Rod Bengston.
cornucopia-flowers.jpg
Everyone loves some type of food, and Cleveland has garnered a national reputation as a "foodie" town.

Here's some food for thought: We want to put together a program on Cleveland's food scene and would like to know whom you want to hear from on this topic.

Do you want to hear about all the ethnic cuisines that could be found here? What changes have journalists who cover the food beat seen?

The region's food scene always is evolving. The farm-to-table movement has people thinking about making meals differently.

Send those ideas to rodbengston@sbcglobal.net, or if you know a board member, feel free to contact them, too. You see this is a time we're definitely looking for some food for thought.

Roy W Howard National Collegiate
Reporting Competition - Enter by Dec. 15

Every Year the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Indiana University School of Journalism offer the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition for journalism students

When the award was first established in honor of Roy W. Howard, who from 1922 to 1953 led the Scripps Howard Newspapers, grants were awarded to the college newspapers of the students who won, and the winners themselves received scholarships.

Howard was noted for his travels to Asia as a journalist, and for interviews with leaders that others could not reach. In honor of those travels, a 10-day tour of Japan was added to the scholarship in 2006. It gives winners the chance to study journalism in another culture while visiting landmarks and media organizations.

If you want to enter, start preparing your online application now. You will need:

  • A portfolio of work;
  • A résumé;
  • A 400-word essay describing why you want to participate; and
  • A letter of recommendation/verification.

Deadline to apply is Dec. 15. Click here for more information and to enter.
