President's Message
Journalists need great social media skills
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

Social media. Those are two words that are not going to go away, and they're probably going to keep getting more important.

And our next SPJ program on Oct. 29 at the Market Garden Brewery will show how you can use social media to improve your stories. A variety of journalists will explain how they have used social media to their advantage. It does not matter if the media outlet is big or small. To full participate in today's journalistic world, social media are no longer optional.

Full event details are in the article below.

But while we will talk about modern technology we're still going a little old-school. People will be able to have a beer or two during the discussion.

And maybe, after the program, people will be toasting the new technology.

Foodies! Send ideas to Rod Bengston.
cornucopia-flowers.jpg
Everyone loves some type of food, and Cleveland has garnered a national reputation as a "foodie" town.

Here's some food for thought: We want to put together a program on Cleveland's food scene and would like to know whom you want to hear from on this topic.

Do you want to hear about all the ethnic cuisines that could be found here? What changes have journalists who cover the food beat seen?

The region's food scene always is evolving. The farm-to-table movement has people thinking about making meals differently.

Send those ideas to rodbengston@sbcglobal.net, or if you know a board member, feel free to contact them, too. You see this is a time we're definitely looking for some food for thought.

Roy W Howard National Collegiate
Reporting Competition - Enter by Dec. 15

Every Year the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Indiana University School of Journalism offer the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition for journalism students

When the award was first established in honor of Roy W. Howard, who from 1922 to 1953 led the Scripps Howard Newspapers, grants were awarded to the college newspapers of the students who won, and the winners themselves received scholarships.

Howard was noted for his travels to Asia as a journalist, and for interviews with leaders that others could not reach. In honor of those travels, a 10-day tour of Japan was added to the scholarship in 2006. It gives winners the chance to study journalism in another culture while visiting landmarks and media organizations.

If you want to enter, start preparing your online application now. You will need:

  • A portfolio of work;
  • A résumé;
  • A 400-word essay describing why you want to participate; and
