President's Message
Calling all foodies! Help us plan a great program
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

Everyone loves some type of food, and Cleveland has garnered a national reputation as a "foodie" town.

Here's some food for thought: We want to put together a program on

Cleveland's food scene and would like to know whom you want to hear from on this topic.

Do you want to hear about all the ethnic cuisines that could be found here? What changes have journalists who cover the food beat seen?

The region's food scene always is evolving. The farm-to-table movement has people thinking about making meals differently.

Send those ideas to me at rodbengston@sbcglobal.net, or if you know a board member, feel free to contact them, too. You see this is a time we're definitely looking for some food for thought.

Rodney Bengston

President, SPJ Cleveland

Is it time to update the SPJ Code of Ethics?

Do you think the SPJ Code of Ethics needs to be revised?

Click here to let us know your ideas and you can be part of the changes that will be submitted at the national Excellence in Journalism 2014 conference.

Roy W Howard National Collegiate
Reporting Competition - Enter by Dec. 15

Every Year the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Indiana University School of Journalism offer the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition for journalism students

When the award was first established in honor of Roy W. Howard, who from 1922 to 1953 led the Scripps Howard Newspapers, grants were awarded to the college newspapers of the students who won, and the winners themselves received scholarships.

Howard was noted for his travels to Asia as a journalist, and for interviews with leaders that others could not reach. In honor of those travels, a 10-day tour of Japan was added to the scholarship in 2006. It gives winners the chance to study journalism in another culture while visiting landmarks and media organizations.

If you want to enter, start preparing your online application now. You will need:

  • A portfolio of work;
  • A résumé;
  • A 400-word essay describing why you want to participate; and
  • A letter of recommendation/verification.

Deadline to apply is Dec. 15. Click here for more information and to enter.

Hike and network at the NEO/STC fall social

Here's a way to multitask - or at least duotask. Meet members of the North East Ohio Society for Technical Communication and learn about what it takes to be a technical writer. At the same time go for a relaxing hike in this year's fall beauty.  It costs nothing for the 2.5 mile trek through the Hemlock Loop trail at the Brecksville reservation. Afterwards sit down at a local restaurant and join in the camaraderie.

When:  Oct. 20,  1 p.m.

Where: Hemlock Loop trail at the Brecksville Reservation

Cost:  No cost for the hike

RSVP: Ginny Haas at ghaas@radcomservices.com or 330-329-8655 by noon on October 18.
