President's Message
Facing a career change? Our panel's advice
Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

Everyone always is going through some sort of change. That's one of the lessons of the recent SPJ program at the Brooklyn library.

Another thing people must determine after a job loss is whether they are going to make a job change or a career change, said Marcia Jones, manager of Career Services at Lorain County Community College. She added that many local colleges offer free resources.

Gary Mitchell of the Encompass Group said he became an "unintentional entrepreneur" when his regular job disappeared. You need to make your business profitable, he added, but must be careful to not price it out of the market.

Frances Dwyer McCaffrey, grants developer at LCCC, said grant proposal writers must know their audience and be able to follow the format. She added her success rate on grants is 35 percent, which is considered a strong track record.

The biggest lesson for the day may have been you can have a successful business or nonprofit venture but, as in school, you have to do your homework.

Roy W Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition - Enter by Dec. 15

Every Year the Scripps Howard Foundation and the Indiana University School of Journalism offer the Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition for journalism students

When the award was first established in honor of Roy W. Howard  - who from 1922 to 1953 led the Scripps Howard Newspapers -  grants were awarded to the college newspapers of the students who won, and the winners themselves received scholarships.

Howard was noted for his travels to Asia as a journalist and for the fact that he interviewed leaders that others could not reach. In honor of those travels, a 10-day tour of Japan was added In 2006. It gives winners the chance to study journalism in another culture while visiting landmarks and media organizations.

If you want to enter, start preparing your online application now. You will need:

  • A portfolio of work;
  • A résumé;
  • A 400-word essay describing why you want to participate; and
  • A letter of recommendation/verification.

Deadline to apply is Dec. 15. Click Here for more information and to enter.
