What not to say or do in the job hunt:
Advice from journalism job recruiters
 | | Rodney Bengston |
Journalists need to go back to the basics sometimes, especially when they are in job hunting mode. That's what I found out at the recent Excellence in Journalism convention in Anaheim, Calif.
I asked recruiters what mistakes students (and some veteran journalists) were making.
A McClatchy Newspapers representative said many students did not proofread their résumés, dress professionally or have their 30-second sales pitch down.
Cindy Stamer of Bloomberg News said many committed one cardinal sin. "They did not research the company."
"If they can tell me their favorite program on Bloomberg television, they move to the top of the stack," one of Stamer's fellow recruiters chimed in.
Barb Maushard of Hearst Television said many students had the unrealistic expectation of starting in a large market. "They're not thinking about working their way up," she said. "They also need to know the job they're applying for."
Don't tell Fernando Rodriguez-Vila, director of production and development at Fusion, that you want to "tell stories."
Fusion is a joint TV venture of ABC and Univision that is due to start broadcasting later this year, aimed at English-speaking Hispanics.
Rodriguez-Vila says "telling stories" is a stock answer that tells him nothing. "I want young journalists who want to innovate. I want to hear five big questions they want their journalism to answer."
He also looks for things besides journalism chop. The skills are important, he added, but also wants people to have other passions. One man's ice cream blog helped get him hired.
And here is one final tip for veteran journalists seeking work from a McClatchy Newspapers rep: "Don't apologize for having 20 years of experience."
