President's Message
|
From newsroom to entrepreneurship
 | | Rodney Bengston |
You're a journalist who has just lost a job, and you decide it's time to strike out on your own.
But the big question is: Where do you start?
One starting point could be the Cleveland SPJ chapter's 10 a.m. Sept. 21 program "From newsroom to entrepreneurship," to be held at the Cuyahoga County Public Library's Brooklyn branch, 4480 Ridge Road, Brooklyn.
This workshop could provide the facts you need to help get a grant for your non-profit journalism venture.
Journalists all over the country are reinventing themselves. A non-profit venture may not be for everyone, but I think it is best to explore all options in today's quick-changing world. We're requesting that people register here to ensure a spot.
On another note, the Excellence in Journalism '13 convention in Anaheim, Calif., last weekend was brimming with good ideas and I'll share my thoughts in the next few columns.
This short column is going to end with a bit of a cliffhanger because I want you come back (and because I'm still a little jetlagged). I asked recruiters at the convention what mistakes young people (and some seasoned pros) were making when applying for jobs. For the answers, as they say, tune in next time.
Sincerely,
Rodney Bengston
President, SPJ Cleveland
