President's Message
|
From invisible member to chapter president
 | | Rodney Bengston |
I was one of the invisible members of the Society of Professional Journalists for a long time.
My check was dutifully sent in each year to renew my membership, and I always looked at Quill magazine but did not really participate.
But I joined the board a couple of years ago and found it a nicely rewarding experience that has enriched me professionally and personally.
So why should someone join SPJ? There are three major reasons:
- Networking. SPJ events will widen your circle friends among journalists, and that cannot be a bad thing in today's uncertain job climate.
- Educational opportunities. SPJ offers various training programs at bargain basement prices, and updated skills can help your perform your job better.
- The chance to commiserate. I'll soon be heading off to the national SPJ conference in Anaheim, and the opportunity to talk with other journalists going through the same situation often helps make yours more bearable.
With the recent restructuring at The Plain Dealer and Sun News, many journalists will now be looking for new jobs and maybe even new careers. I am among those seeking my next career challenge.
When I'm in Anaheim for SPJ's national convention, I hope to learn the state of journalism throughout the country. With so many journalists now looking for work, the Cleveland chapter of SPJ wants your ideas on how we might be able to help. The board will be meeting this Saturday to discuss program ideas for the upcoming year, so if you have any suggestions, feel free to email them to me at rodbengston@sbcglobal.net.
For many journalists, one chapter has closed but it's time to write another one. Here's to great, new beginnings for all of us.
Sincerely,
Rodney Bengston
President, SPJ Cleveland

| Shield Law: Are you for or against? |
There's a lively discussion going on amongst SPJ journalists. Some are in favor of the proposed federal shield law to protect press rights and some, like former SPJ President Mac McKerral, are against it. Where do you stand?
David Cuillier, the national president-elect of SPJ, has posted a link to McKerral's argument in his blog. He invites us to share our opinions.
Cuillier, director and associate professor at the University of Arizona School of Journalism, was the SPJ Freedom of Information Committee chairman for four years and an SPJ newsroom trainer since 2005. He visited us here in Cleveland in the summer of 2011 for an excellent training session on access to information, during a cross-country tour he did that summer.

Writer's Week now on summer schedule
|
|
"Summer slowdown....taking a breather...lazy, hazy days". They're all clichés that call to mind this time of year and they all have one point. It's time to rest.
Here at Writers Week we relax just a bit too and, for the months of July and August, we go on a two-week publishing schedule.
So please notify us just a bit earlier than normal about your special events and look forward to keeping in touch with what's going on in the world of SPJ every second week after this issue.
