President's Message

Good journalism always will have a place

Rodney Bengston
Rodney Bengston

The world is always changing, and recently in journalism those changes have been occurring at warp speed.

Technology has offered us new ways to deliver stories, and economic realities mean many media outlets are doing their jobs with much smaller staffs.

When I started at Sun News many years ago, we were using typewriters and an optical scanner to get copy into our computer system. I have seen many changes as I have worked as a copy editor, reporter, columnist, production editor and news editor. And more changes are coming I'm sure.

But here is one thing I think: Good journalism always will have a place.

A recent Cleveland SPJ program discussed how WKYC-TV (Channel 3) handled its coverage of the Chardon school shootings, which earned a national Sigma Delta Chi award in the breaking news category.

And, yes, the Channel 3 staff had some new technology that helped them do their jobs. But I think the most important thing they did was develop sources in the community and earn their trust.

Journalists now need to update their technological skills constantly, but basic tenets of being fair and honest will always apply.

I'm looking forward to the year ahead for the Cleveland chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. We will be meeting in August to discuss our programming for the upcoming year, and we would like to hear your ideas of what types of programs you want. Feel free to contact me at rodbengston@sbcglobal.net or at 440-334-0141 to share your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Rodney Bengston

SPJ Cleveland co-sponsors

seminar on lead writing

Cliff Anthony
Cliff Anthony

We talk a lot about the body of a news story but a great intro is crucial if anyone is going to read what the article says. SPJ is co-sponsoring a seminar devoted to the all-important "lead" (or as some spell it, "lede").

Join SPJ Cleveland chapter board member Cliff Anthony, author of the novel "Page A1," on July 27 at the Euclid Library for a free, one-hour presentation, "Writers, Hook Your Readers." Brush up on ways to catch attention and draw people into your story from the first word.

Anthony is a newspaper veteran and associate professor of journalism at Lorain County Community College. He will use his experience and expertise to show where and how to write different types of news story leads and why each one is effective.

When: July 27, 10-11 a.m.

Where: Euclid Public Library, Erie Room

631 E 222nd St  Cleveland, OH 44123

Writer's Week now on
summer schedule

"Summer slowdown....taking a breather...lazy, hazy days". They're all clichés that call to mind this time of year and they all have one point. It's time to rest.

Here at Writers Week we relax just a bit too and, for the months of July and August, we go on a two-week publishing schedule.

So please notify us just a bit earlier than normal about your special events and look forward to keeping in touch with what's going on in the world of SPJ every second week after this issue.

Her master's thesis on the Bhutanese refugees in the Cleveland area was nominated by the CSU Graduate Committee for the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) 2011 Distinguished Master's Thesis Competition.

Each year, as part of SPJ's mission to encourage diversity in the newsroom, six SPJ members are chosen to learn more about the organization through in-depth exposure. The process starts at the Excellence in Journalism convention with complimentary registration as well as travel to the conference, where they will attend board and business meetings, get to know members of the SPJ leadership team and attend conference sessions and events.
