President's Message

Where is Steven Newhouse?

Dear friends:

Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello

Everyone knows the changes that are coming to The Plain Dealer starting Aug. 5. But is our community concerned about the changes taking place in print media and how they will impact us? Are we complacent, as we watch what the media moguls are doing? Is journalism just another business, or is there any accountability to the public? Has anyone come up with the definition of a sustainable business model in the news business?

Yes, this is a time of transformational technological change, with a significant revolution in media production. Generational preferences have influenced changes in the media environment. But will journalism take on a different visage in Cleveland? Will the power of the press still exist as journalists face uncertainty about their futures and possible layoffs?

In March we sent a letter to Steven Newhouse, president of Advance.net, which oversees the Internet vision and strategy for affiliates of Advance Publications, Inc. Newhouse is also chairman of the board of Advance Publications, Inc., owners of The PD, among other publications and newspapers in more than 25 American cities. We invited him to visit Cleveland to participate in a Forum/Town Hall presentation to discuss the future of print journalism. We wanted to invite public officials, professors, students and the community at large to attend. We also offered him the option of a long distance video conference. Despite the letter and follow up, there has been no response from Mr. Newhouse.

Our SPJ Code of Ethics clearly states that as journalists, we are accountable to our readers, viewers and each other. Journalists should:

  • Clarify and explain news coverage and invite dialogue with the public over journalistic conduct.
  • Encourage the public to voice grievances against the news media.
  • Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
  • Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.
  • Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.

For years, our favorite PD has brought the world to our doorsteps, informing us, serving as a watchdog, bringing criminals to justice and providing accountability reporting. We have enjoyed the columnists' views and the powerful insights of the editorial writing that have helped to develop public opinion. Will this in-depth coverage and quality continue, or is it at risk? And what about all the faithful readers of the PD who don't have access to the Internet? Please Mr. Newhouse, we want to talk with you here in Cleveland!

Dear readers, please email us with your thoughts and ideas.

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

Meet WKYC's prizewinning news team!
Award-winning WKYC-TV News team
Some of WKYC's winning team (l-r): Brennan Donnellan, currently news director; Lisa Lowry, assignment editor; Chris Tye, morning news anchor; Rita Andolsen, former news director and currently director of advocacy & community initiatives; and Russ Mitchell, evening news anchor.

Channel 3 WKYC News will be honored on June 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with a Sigma Delta Chi Award for Breaking News Coverage of the Chardon High School shootings on Feb. 28, 2012. At a forum organized by SPJ at their offices on June 13, we heard firsthand about their coverage and the team behind it.

By Cheryl D'Mello

Dynamic teamwork marked the coverage of the Chardon High School shootings on Feb. 28, 2012 by WKYC Channel 3 television. What started out as a typical quiet morning for Lisa Lowry, assignment editor at WKYC, turned surreal as the events taking place 10 minutes from her home at Chardon High School began to unfold.

"It was the first time that Rita Andolsen, then news director, heard my voice shake," she said.

Quick thinking and awareness got the crews out for live, continuous, non-stop coverage. "There was so much chaos, so much going on, with terrified parents and local residents. It was our responsibility to tell the people what was happening," said Andolsen, now the station's director of advocacy & community initiatives.

For Russ Mitchell, the 6 and 11 p.m. news anchor, who was brand new to Cleveland at the time, this was his first major local story.

"9-11 would be what I would compare it to," Mitchell said, adding that it was amazing how the community came together after the shootings. "It was impressive and made me proud of it."

"We got into the DNA of the story by being deliberate and not jumping to conclusions," said Chris Tye, the morning news anchor. "It was a challenge to keep it from being repetitive."

According to Lowry, "We were really providing a public service," as decisions were made to cancel commercials and continue the coverage.

"It was a challenge, to go live with non-stop coverage. We created a new normal," said Andolsen. New technology and backpack journalism helped. "Besides serving our own community first, we had to be mindful that we are a Gannett station and NBC affiliate."

There were calls coming from across the country, pressures from every direction. This was a chance to build networks with other stations.

Brennan Donnellan, formerly managing editor and current news director, was in the trenches in this incident and spoke of the role of social media: "It was a web of interconnected social media conversation going on, and more news people are geared to that side now."

A post mortem of the coverage helped reveal what worked and what did not.

"You apply what you know next time, and it makes the team stronger," said Andolsen. "One of the factors that make the difference is who we are: respectful, compassionate and accurate. I was very proud of the whole team!"

"Radio Days, SPJ style"

Nostalgia Night

June 27

Tom Moore
Tom Moore

As late as the early 90s, nearly every radio station in Cleveland, even if they were a music station, did local news. Radio stations had one or two news anchors. Some had a reporter or two. That's changed, though.

Now, the only two full-blown radio news departments left in town are at Clear Channel - which does news for the seven stations it owns locally - and at Ideastream, which is Cleveland's public broadcasting arm. The few other radio stations that do news may have one person who has other duties, or they farm it out to an outside service based out of town.

What was it like in the days when radio stations competed, not just for audiences, but also for breaking news stories?

Find out by joining SPJ for our fourth annual Nostalgia Night, which this year is called "Radio Days, SPJ Style."

SPJ Cleveland chapter Secretary-Treasurer

Tom Moore

has put together a group of radio veterans to come and share stories about what it was like back when, at a news conference, the majority of those in attendance were from radio.

Those who have said they'll take part include
Joe Mosbrook (WKYC),
Tim Taylor (WHK),
Ed Richards (WGAR),
Don Olson (WGAR),
Jim McIntyre
(WERE, WWWE, WDOK and WHK) and

Ken Robinson

(WJMO, WGAR and WTAM).
Tom himself may have a few things to add, given that's he's a veteran of both WERE and WTAM.

Nostalgia night will be Thursday, June 27. We'll be gathering at 6:30

p.m. in the Cleveland Press Collection room on the 3rd floor of the Michael Schwartz Library at Cleveland State University. There's free parking on Chester and the other streets near the library after 6 p.m. The event will start with the quick election of the chapter's new officers, and then we'll move on to hearing from those who used to make a living by running around town with a tape recorder or by anchoring hourly newscasts.

Light snacks will be served along with beverages. The Nostalgia Night event is free, but we'd li

ke you to RSVP online by clicking here, so we have a headcount.
