Visitors and winners this week's highlights
Dear friends:
 | | Cheryl D'Mello |
Recently inundated with visiting relatives, I got busy with the perfunctory sightseeing: driving them to admire our lake, shopping malls, and visiting the legendary Niagara Falls. Staggering about on the Maid of the Mist, we met tourists from all over the world. And as we sped home to Cleveland in a minivan, we had a chance to share memories, history, and ancestry. For those few days, I skipped reading the daily newspaper. To assuage my sense of guilt in such circumstances, I tend to resort to Henry David Thoreau's famous quote: "Read not the Times, read the Eternities ..." (not sure all journalists will agree!)
Congratulations to the winners of the Press Club of Cleveland's 2013 Excellence in Journalism Awards! We are proud to announce that SPJ Cleveland Board member Stan Bullard of Crain's Cleveland Business won three awards. Another board member, Cliff Anthony, who is the adviser to The Collegian, Lorain County Community College's student newspaper, steered his journalism students to win three awards. As well, three of the four John Carroll student winners were in past-president Carrie Buchanan's journalism class this spring, though she shares credit for guiding them with Carroll News adviser and chapter member Bob Noll. View and download the list of winners here.
Our next event is also about winners: the WKYC News team that won the national Sigma Delta Chi Award. Come join us on June 13, this Thursday, at 7 p.m. at the Channel 3 building, 1333 Lakeside Ave., Cleveland. We invite you to come and listen to a panel discussion by our nationally recognized prizewinners such as Rita Andolsen and Russ Mitchell for their handling of the Chardon High School shootings. The event is free and open to all.
And before your calendar for June gets filled up, please mark June 27 for attending our Nostalgia Night "Radio Days: SPJ Style" event. See you soon!

Cleveland's own Channel 3 WKYC News will be honored on June 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with a Sigma Delta Chi Award for its coverage of the Chardon High School shootings in February 2012.

Andolsen and Mitchell will be members of a panel brought together to discuss
