President's Message

Summertime and the PD is changin'
Dear friends:
 | | Cheryl D'Mello |
Once again, the year surges forward into a sunny summer. It's a chance to catch up on yard work, attend graduations and celebrations, cookouts and concerts, and visit with family and friends across the country. Visitors to Cleveland look incredulous when they hear that the greenery in our great outdoors is only temporary, that it is only a matter of time before the snow will cover the lushness once again.
The Plain Dealer recently revealed the changes coming to meet the "evolving needs of our print and digital audiences." On May 2, Robert Perona, senior vice president of circulation, announced that on Aug. 5, two months from today, the PD would commence home delivery of its "premium print experience" three times a week. A bonus Saturday edition is slated to be an "enhancement to our weekend experience." There will be a spanking new "updated digital edition" allowing us to access the paper "anytime and anywhere." In addition, there will be "valuable subscriber benefits" to be announced soon. Subscribing to home delivery includes access to the daily digital edition and the Saturday home-delivered bonus edition.
We at SPJ were disappointed that we never heard back from Steven Newhouse, chairman of Advance.net, a subsidiary of Advance Publications Inc., the owners of the PD. In March we sent him a formal invitation to visit Cleveland to participate in a forum/town hall presentation or a video conference to discuss the future of journalism. We were looking forward to meeting him and will continue to try and reach him, even as the changes at the PD get underway.
In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming SPJ events on June 13 and June 27 put together especially for you!

WKYC to discuss its prizewinning coverage
of the 2012 Chardon High School shooting

Cleveland's own Channel 3 WKYC News will be honored on June 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with a Sigma Delta Chi Award for its coverage of the Chardon High School shootings in February 2012.

Andolsen and Mitchell will be members of a panel brought together to discuss
the fast decisions needed around how to handle the story as it broke. Join in the question and answer session that will follow.
When: June 13, 7 p.m. Where: WKYC-TV 133 Lakeside Ave., Cleveland For more information, contact Rodney Bengston at rodbengston@sbcglobal.net or (440) 334-0141. |
