Federal shield law - a call to action
 | | Cheryl D'Mello |
We do hope you are enjoying our so far surprisingly cool summer! Before you get totally relaxed, we have an urgent task for you that needs to be done this week.
SPJ is once again gearing up to fight for a federal shield law to protect journalists and their confidential sources. National SPJ President Sonny Albarado is asking all of us to email or call both of our U.S. senators by Friday to urge them to pass the federal shield law, which has just been reintroduced as the Free Flow of Information Act of 2013 (H.R. 1962 and S. 987). We need to let them know how important this legislation is for society.
The recent spying on Associated Press reporters by the federal government to uncover the sources of leaked information demonstrates the need for a check on executive agencies. Journalists cannot do their job as watchdogs on government if they cannot receive some information confidentially. That's why 49 states and the District of Columbia now have "shield laws" that protect the right of journalists to keep confidential the names of sources whose careers could be in jeopardy for revealing information the public needs to know. But these laws only apply at state and local levels.
The SPJ national website has a webpage full of information about the shield law, and also the contact information for our two senators, Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican Rob Portman. There are also some helpful suggestions on crafting an email or message. We would also appreciate it if you would email SPJ at shield@spj.org to let them know that you have contacted our senators.
Please spread the word through email and social media, encouraging colleagues to do the same. Help SPJ raise support for a federal shield law. If you believe in journalism and democracy, we request that you please act now!
Also, please mark your calendars for June 13, Thursday, at 7 p.m. Cleveland news reporters from WKYC-TV have been recognized with a national Sigma Delta Chi Award for their handling of the Chardon High School shootings. We invite you to come and listen to how they covered the story at our next event at 1333 Lakeside Ave., Cleveland. WKYC-TV news anchor Russ Mitchell and Rita Andolsen, who was news director at the time of the shootings and now is WKYC's director of advocacy & community initiatives, will be on the panel.

WKYC to discuss its prizewinning coverage
of the 2012 Chardon High School shooting
|
Cleveland's own Channel 3 WKYC News will be honored on June 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with a Sigma Delta Chi Award for its coverage of the Chardon High School shootings in February 2012.
We at SPJ Cleveland thought everyone would like to hear more from those involved in the coverage, about how they did it. Rita Andolsen, who was news director at the time, and anchor Russ Mitchell have invited us to the station on June 13 to hear all about it.
Andolsen and Mitchell will be members of a panel brought together to discuss
the fast decisions needed around how to handle the story as it broke. Join in the question and answer session that will follow.
When: June 13, 7 p.m. Where: WKYC-TV 133 Lakeside Ave., Cleveland For more information, contact Rodney Bengston at rodbengston@sbcglobal.net or (440) 334-0141. |
