President's Message

Three Winning Toms feted at City Club | | Cheryl D'Mello |
Yesterday we gathered to honor three people in the world of journalism at the City Club in Cleveland: Tom Beres, Tom Moore and Thomas Hamzik. Yes, strangely enough, they were all named Tom!
Broadcasting veteran Beres of WKYC won a Distinguished Service Award for his contribution to the field of journalism, and Tom Moore of Clear Channel Radio, including WTAM 1100, won a DSA for his contribution to the Society of Professional Journalists. Hamzik, the promising young journalist from Padua Franciscan High School, was awarded the 2013 Philip W. Porter Scholarship, which will provide $1,000 a year for four years toward his journalism education at Elon University.
Along with accolades by Cleveland State University Professor Anup Kumar, former congressman and current political analyst Dennis Eckart, and well-known Cleveland radio personality Jim McIntyre, special guest Bill Knittel, Poet Laureate of the City of Lakewood, recited a poem he wrote for Beres (see reprint at right).
Beres had brought along a relic, "besides himself," he joked - the vintage audition videotape that got him the job at Channel 3. Amidst laughter, Beres spoke about the technological changes in the world of journalism: "It's getting tougher to be a legacy mainstream media guy in a social media world."
Young Hamzik, with over 300 sports stories on Cleveland.com to his credit as he heads off to college, told an amusing story about an interview in which he mistook his subject's identity and had to quickly adapt as he discovered his mistake. Journalism, he stressed, "is all about adapting."
Moore succinctly wrapped up the award ceremonies, saying, "You can have all the best technology possible, but when it comes down to journalism, you still need the best people."
So writers, please keep that ink flowing, even as the Plain Dealer announces the changes that are coming.
Sincerely,

WKYC to discuss its prizewinning Chardon school shooting coverage
| Cleveland's own Channel 3 WKYC News will be honored on June 21 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., with a Sigma Delta Chi Award for its coverage of the Chardon High School shootings in February 2012.
We at SPJ Cleveland thought everyone would like to hear more from those involved in the coverage, about how they did it. Rita Andolsen, who was news director at the time, and anchor Russ Mitchell have invited us to the station on June 13 to hear all about it.
We'll have more details for you in coming editions of Writer's Week, but for now, mark your calendar to be sure you can be there that evening. The event will start at 7 p.m., at Channel 3, 1333 Lakeside Ave., Cleveland 44114.

The Journalistic Crown
| By Bill Knittel Lakewood Poet Laureate
The Society of Professional Journalists Are honoring Tom Beres this year, And I for one am elated, So I'm writing this poem, as a cheer;
To this man of intelligence, So witty and smart, Does his job with finesse, With compassion and heart;
At Channel 3 he's a fixture, Over 32 years, A correspondent respected And loved by his peers;
His TV presence is top notch, Never biased or crass, A gentleman always, A reporter with class;
He has won several Emmys And that says a lot, What other stations are missing Our Tom Beres has got;
Two Emmys he garnered For investigative reporting, Took many hours and days Of collecting and sorting;
He knows what he's doing, Always hits the right cord, And he truly deserves The Distinguished Service Award;
So let's toast our Tom Beres, Let's stand up and shout, for this gentleman we know Is what reporting is all about.
P.S. It's so good to see the news, When Tom Beres is around, For he surely is a gem In the "Journalistic Crown."
