President's Message
Padua Franciscan senior Tom Hamzik
wins Porter journalism scholarship

Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello

In spite of yet another dismal kidnapping story coming out of Cleveland, here is some good news to keep our spirits up! Thomas Hamzik of Padua Franciscan High School has won the 2013 Philip W. Porter Scholarship administered by the Cleveland chapter of SPJ.

"I feel thankful and blessed to win this very prestigious award," said Hamzik, who will be attending Elon University, NC this fall, where he plans to major in journalism. The $4,000 award will be spread over four years of college. He was chosen from among a group of bright, young, budding journalists from high schools across Northeast Ohio. Yes, the future of journalism is in competent hands!

Thomas Hamzik

Hamzik began his sportswriting career in his sophomore year of high school. "Since I wasn't playing baseball that year, I started writing about sports to stay involved in sports." A self- taught writer, Hamzik became a community reporter on Cleveland.com, which has published about 300 of his articles about Padua sports. He has issued more than 19,000 tweets (@BruinsReporter) and has 840 followers. He has also written for the school magazine, The Paduan.

Hamzik, who maintains a 4.0 grade-point average, is thankful to everyone who helped and motivated him along the way, his parents and Padua's athletic department. His goal is to become a sports reporter for a national news outlet.

Our chapter's Scholarship Committee, headed by board member Anup Kumar, assistant professor in the School of Communication at Cleveland State University, unanimously chose Hamzik, who demonstrates a strong commitment to journalism, with the enthusiasm and potential for excellence.

Along with Tom Beres from WKYC and our Secretary-Treasurer Tom Moore, news anchor for Clear Channel and WTAM 1100, who will be honored with Distinguished Service Awards, SPJ Cleveland will also honor Hamzik at the awards luncheon scheduled for May 21 at the City Club in downtown Cleveland, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tickets ($25) may be purchased here. We do hope you will come and celebrate with us!

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

Tom Beres

Beres' 32 years at WKYC make him the longest-standing television reporter at a single station in all of Cleveland. His contributions to Cleveland life have won him three Emmys, two for investigative journalism. He has also hosted "Between The Lines," the Sunday morning political discussion show.

Beres will be honored with a Distinguished Service Award for his many contributions to journalism.

Special to our hearts and our

This Saturday
CSU recognizes Brent Larkin,
Nina Totenberg and Carl Stern

Three Cleveland journalistic heavyweights are to be recognized at Cleveland State University Cleveland-Marshall College of Law's commencement ceremony this Saturday, May 18

Brent Larkin, prior editorial director of The Plain Dealer, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree. Nina Totenberg, National Public Radio's legal affairs correspondent, will be the commencement speaker and will also be awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree to add to her awards, and  Carl Stern will receive the Dean's Distinguished Achievement Award.

Known for over 40 years as one of the most prominent journalists covering the Cleveland scene, Larkin's coverage of Cleveland politics began at the Cleveland Press. In 1981, he moved to The Plain Dealer. First a writer, then a columnist and finally, editorial director until his retirement in 2009, Larkin still writes a Sunday column for the Forum section.

During nearly 40 years as an NPR legal correspondent, Nina Totenberg received widespread recognition for her coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court and other legal affairs. She was the anchor during the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings for Judge Clarence Thomas. It was, in fact, her report that led the hearings to be reopened and  to NPR's winning the George Foster Peabody award for its coverage. Currently, her reports can be heard on many NPR programs including newsmagazines

"All Things Considered," "Morning Edition," and "Weekend Edition."

Carl Stern has won many awards during his more than 50 years in journalism, in government and as a professor. The recognition of his contributions includes a Peabody Award for radio and meritorious service to broadcasting and during his stint as director of public affairs for the U.S. Department of Justice, an Edmund J. Randolph Award for public service.  Stern started his career in radio at KYW-Cleveland and then moved to television, first at Cleveland's KYW-TV and WKYC-TV and then at the national level with NBC. For 26 years he was NBC's reporting authority on the U.S. Supreme Court and Justice Department.

The ceremony will take place May 18 at 2 p.m. in the Cleveland State University Bert L. and Iris S. Wolstein Center.

This Wednesday
Scripps Howard's "Arson in America" project is subject of HIGTS webinar
How I got that story

Many psychology professionals believe serial arsonists and serial killers have much in common.

  • They get a rush of excitement from the act
  • They repeat it again and again
  • They can't empathize with their victims

There's even evidence that suggests they repeat other acts that cause suffering and those acts could be revealed through statistical methods.

David Icove, a University of Tennessee arson scholar one day read a Scripps story about a computer method that could look through FBI files and uncover serial killings. "Could we do the same thing with FEMA's fire database to look for serial arsonists?" he thought and he contacted Thomas Hargrove who, since 1996, has been at Scripps Howard News Service, concentrating on quantified research.

Hargrove won the Philip Meyer National Journalism award for both 2008 and 2011 when he created the computer algorithm that sorts through FBI files and discovers serial murder victims and when he also questioned SIDS diagnoses in the infant mortality files of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Icove's question started "Arson in America," a Scripps Howard national reporting project designed to use Hargrove's methods to uncover serial arsonists from FEMA's fire database

This month's How I Got That Story will be presented by Hargrove, who will discuss:

  • Ways to question the accuracy of arson reporting
  • Ways to ask if fire departments are conducting high quality arson investigations
  • The questioning of fire and police about the chance that serial arsonists are at work in a community
  • Ways to note patterns in fires, like Hell nights when purposely set fires are much more likely to break out.

Join SPJ Cleveland chapter board member Cliff Anthony, author of the novel "Page A1," on July 27 at the Euclid Library for a free, one-hour presentation, "Writers, Hook Your Readers." Brush up on ways to catch attention and draw people into your story from the first word.

Anthony is a newspaper veteran and associate professor of journalism at Lorain County Community College. He will use his experience and expertise to show where and how to write different types of news story leads and why each one is effective.
