President's Message
A warm welcome for Eye on Ohio
Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello

Journalists, writers, professors, and

heads of non-profits from across Ohio gathered at the Visible Voice bookstore in Tremont on May 3 for the kick-off party for Eye on Ohio. It was a chance to meet with board members of Ohio's new non-profit investigative journalism center.

We relaxed in the ambience of the bookstore's quaint courtyard to the soothing music of a guitarist, while we sampled appetizers and indulged in some wine tasting. The event also gave us an opportunity to network and browse through the interesting books in the store.

Eye on Ohio has been founded by journalists committed to preserving and enhancing the practice of investigative journalism.

In this issue of Writer's Week, Lori Ashyk, executive director of the group, writes a piece clarifying the mission of this organization and correcting some inaccuracies previously stated in an April 21 article about it.

We wish Eye on Ohio success in all its endeavors!

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

Investigative start-up celebrates kick-off

Eye on Ohio logo

By Lori Ashyk

Eye on Ohio, a new non-profit journalism center that was the focus of two recent pieces in this SPJ newsletter, appreciates this opportunity to tell you in our own words what we are all about, and to correct inaccurate information that has been written about us.

We are committed to in-depth and investigative journalism and to practicing the highest standards of reporting and non-profit organizational management. We will be cross-platform, meaning we will be publishing in print and broadcast on our website; we will use multiple distributions methods and seek partnerships and collaborations when they are sure to produce quality stories. We are open to new technology while maintaining traditional standards of ethics and reporting.

We also are thrilled to have the support of so many people in our Northeast Ohio and statewide community, as evidenced by the great turnout we had for our kick-off party on May 3 at Visible Voice books in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland and by the many people who have contacted us.

Eye on Ohio officially was incorporated in August 2012. Since then, we've been building an infrastructure: getting our board in place, hammering out, as a staff and board, our mission statement, goals and business plan, filing our 501c3 application, creating our by-laws, obtaining insurance, and more - all the time-consuming but necessary elements of non-profit work. We've become a member of the Investigative News Network and have begun building relationships with other organizations and individuals, in Cleveland, in other parts of Ohio and nationally. We've put up a placeholder website. Now that we have our infrastructure in place, and our tax-exempt status secured through our fiscal sponsor, we are in the very early stages of seeking funding. We are happy to be on task and on time.

We also are confident that our funding will be steady and sustainable. Our revenue will come from a combination of grants, fundraising, memberships, individual donors and other sources. It will support what is most important: journalism that has an impact.

Now, I'd like to address some inaccuracies.

In an earlier column by John Ettorre in this newsletter, there was a quote at the bottom of the piece that was attributed to me. I did not make this statement. About 14 months ago, several people came together at a coffee shop to discuss, informally, what a non-profit journalism center based here might look like and what its mission might be. At this very early, private, informal brainstorming session, before our organization even came to exist, one of the attendees at the gathering did make the statement, but I did not. The quote implies that we intend to practice advocacy journalism, and we do not.

Another of the mischaracterizations in the piece was about potential funding. Again, at that long-ago, private brainstorming meeting - before any decisions were made regarding plans for Eye on Ohio and certainly before I or the Eye on Ohio board made any firm decisions about funding sources - I shared my early research. At the time, it showed that a few national journalism foundations were providing funds to start-ups and I indicated they might be the best place to start in seeking funds for a potential journalism center. But I also made note of the following: national foundations usually require local matches and look to see if there is support from the communities they serve; and that even if initial funds came from a national group, we would need - and want - to seek local funds soon after. at some point. So the statement that initially I was opposed to seeking funds from local foundations was inaccurate and taken out of context. Also, speculation about particular foundations came from Ettorre, not me.

If you'd like clear, accurate and up-to-date information about what Eye on Ohio is up to, please contact me through our website at www.eyeonohio.org.

Will Ohio be ready for
the Affordable Care Act?

If you're a journalist who covers health care, please join the Cleveland-Akron chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists and the Alliance for Health Reform on May 16 for a press briefing.

According to the 2010 health care overhaul law, all states must be ready to enroll millions of people in insurance exchanges. If they are not, the federal government will step in.

Ohio Gov.John Kasich
is still hoping to expand the state's Medicaid program and is committed to seeking federal help with the state's insurance exchange. He has less than a year left to do so and is encountering strong resistance from the Ohio General Assembly.

The panel will discuss:

  • What information do the states still need about how the federal and partnership exchanges will work?
  • How much latitude will the states have to handle eligibility for Medicaid and to make sure that people transitioning between Medicaid and subsidized private insurance in the exchanges won't have gaps in coverage?
  • Can the federal government can be ready with its own exchanges?
  • Will insurers be ready on time?

The  panel will include:

Moderator: Marilyn Werber Serafini, communications director and health policy adviser, Alliance for Health Reform, a nonpartisan, nonprofit health policy group based in Washington, D.C.

Sarah Dash
research faculty associate at Georgetown University's Health Policy Institute

Randall Cebul

director of the Center for Health Care Research and Policy at MetroHealth, and professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

Richard Browdie

president and CEO, Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging

Sarah Jane Tribble

"Arson in America"
identifying serial arsonists
How I got that story

Many psychology professionals believe serial arsonists and serial killers have much in common.

  • They get a rush of excitement from the act
  • They repeat it again and again
  • They can't empathize with their victims

There's even evidence that suggests they repeat other acts that cause suffering and those acts could be revealed through statistical methods.

David Icove, a University of Tennessee arson scholar one day read a Scripps story about a computer method that could look through FBI files and uncover serial killings. "Could we do the same thing with FEMA's fire database to look for serial arsonists?" he thought and he contacted Thomas Hargrove who, since 1996, has been at Scripps Howard News Service, concentrating on quantified research.

Hargrove won the Philip Meyer National Journalism award for both 2008 and 2011 when he created the computer algorithm that sorts through FBI files and discovers serial murder victims and when he also questioned SIDS diagnoses in the infant mortality files of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Icove's question started "Arson in America", a Scripps Howard national reporting project designed to use Hargrove's methods to uncover serial arsonists from FEMA's fire database

This month's How I Got That Story will be presented by Hargrove who will discuss:

  • Ways to question the accuracy of Arson reporting?
  • Ways to ask if fire departments are conducting high quality arson investigations?
  • The questioning of fire and police about the chance that serial arsonists are at work in a community
  • Ways to note patterns in fires, like Hell nights when purposely set fires are much more likely to break out.
