President's message

Our daily newspaper -- with a difference

Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello
The news is finally out about our dear Plain Dealer. It will remain a daily, but daily home delivery will be restricted to Sundays and two other days. It will continue to be published in print and online in an e-edition, seven days a week. It will have a new, digital focus to meet changing needs and times. Sun Newspapers is slated to continue as usual, but will also become part of Northeast Ohio Media Group. All changes are slated for summer, the saddest being inevitable layoffs.

The Plain Dealer dates back to 1842. Today its website proclaims it to be "Ohio's largest newspaper and top advertising source" with "the daily total combined average circulation being 293,139." It is "ranked among the top 20 newspapers in the country" and is an institution that "cares about the community." For more than 170 years it has brought the world to the doorstep of generations of Clevelanders, during sunny, snowy or rainy days. The roll of papers tucked in a blue plastic box or in an orange, white or yellow sleeve at the end of the driveway has been a familiar sight. Now that will change -- to some extent.

With so much going digital, it is difficult -but imperative, to keep up with the times. The lessons are obvious - adapt or perish. The newspaper's president, publisher, CEO and editor have both reiterated their "unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence."

Recently, on behalf of all our SPJ members, we addressed a letter to Steven Newhouse, chairman of Advance.net, which oversees the Internet strategy for affiliates of Advance Publications, Inc., which owns The PD. We have invited him to visit Cleveland for a town hall meeting/forum -- and if he cannot come, to at least participate in a video conference. We want him to discuss the future of print journalism and his vision for the future of newspapers. We are hoping he responds. In the meantime, let's continue to support our hometown newspaper!

One last note: Our chapter board will meet on Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m. in the communication department at Cleveland State University. All are welcome. We aren't sure which room it will be in, so if you're interested in coming, just email me and I'll let you know the room number when we get it. My email address is below.

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

This Friday
James Goodale to speak at the City Club

Those attending the City Club this week will have the honor of hearing James C. Goodale. Often called "the father of the reporter's privilege," Goodale represented the New York Times in all four of its First Amendment cases that reached the Supreme Court.

Goodale has released a new book called "Fighting for the Press: The Inside Story of the Pentagon Papers and Other Battles," an evaluation of  the government's "breach of national security" assertions, including the nearly 40-year-old Pentagon Papers. In the book, he maintains that the Obama administration is responsible for the prosecution of more national security cases than the total of all previous administrations.

Today's most important test of freedom of the press is seen by Goodale as the trial of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. He describes Assange as a publisher of leaked information in the same way the New York Times published the Pentagon Papers.
