The event will spotlight what's working in journalism today, and celebrate successes and solutions. Visit this website for programs and events. The event is a must for p

rofessional and student journalists, journalism educators, PR practitioners and friends of journalism.

Among the offerings is a Super Session titled "New Newspapering," when editors from the top four dailies in Ohio will explain their wide-ranging strategies to stay competitive and relevant. The panelists include Carolyn Washburn, editor, The Cincinnati Enquirer; Jana Collier, editor, Dayton Daily News; Alan Miller, managing editor, Columbus Dispatch and Thom Fladung, managing editor, Cleveland's Plain Dealer.

It is also time to apply for Ohio's Best Journalism, the SPJ contest which will honor the best of Ohio's print, broadcasting, online, trade and college journalism in 2012. The good news is that it now an online contest! No more paper entry forms and mailings. The contest is a collaborative effort of the Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland Pro chapters of SPJ.

This is the only Ohio competition that honors journalists who fulfill the SPJ mission: defense of the First Amendment, support of literacy, resistance to censorship, advocacy for openness of public records and meetings, media self-criticism and community service. The contest recognizes the best college daily and weekly newspapers, and awards up to $2,000 in scholarships for excellent collegiate journalism in news, feature, sports and opinion.

Any journalist working for newspaper, magazines, radio, television, trade, online and college media in Ohio and adjacent states that have significant reach into Ohio can apply. You do not need to be a member of SPJ. Check out the details at this website. A whole slew of prizes awaits you! Remember, the deadline for entries is 11:59 p.m., April 14, 2013.

Phillip Morris wins ASNE award

Congratulations to Phillip Morris of the Plain Dealer for winning the American Society of News Editors 2012 Distinguished Writing Award for Commentary/Column Writing, part of the American Society of News Editors' annual awards for exceptional journalism. Morris was among 316 entries from across the U.S.

The ASNE judges wrote: "Phillip Morris's columns take readers on a journey through the Cleveland area, revealing the region's authentic character - and its characters. Morris effectively uses ordinary people, small examples and anecdotes to illustrate larger issues of community decay and government inaction."

No stranger to awards, Morris was a finalist for both the 2010 and 2011 Pulitzer prize for commentary.

Morris has been at The Plain Dealer for 23 years, starting in the editorial department, then applying his legendary ability to find amazing deeds done by everyday people to a Metro column.

The ASNE awards cover a wide range of journalistic contributions from across the U.S.

"The work that won was brilliant but what blew all of the judges away was how much great work overall there was in every category. Honestly, it was just inspiring to see so much storytelling that made such a difference in our communities," said ASNE President Susan Goldberg, Bloomberg News executive editor

High Security - How I Got That Story
How I got that story

July 28, 2012 saw a never before rupture of security at the Y-12 nuclear weapons facility in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Protesters broke in to the core of the plant, strung crime scene tape, painted slogans on the wall and threw blood on the uranium storehouse.

Frank Munger, senior writer as well as blogger and columnist for the Knoxville News Sentinel, carefully put together a story through report after report that identified the protesters, published the course of events and provided much needed context from his knowledge of the facility and its development.

Over the next months Munger followed the story as deficiencies were exposed, top executives were fired and a security company lost its contract.

On March 20 from 2-3 p.m., Munger will discuss the skills that contributed to the crafting of this major story, including:

  • Using experience to advantage
  • How to create experience if you don't have it
  • Using blogs to break news and build an audience
  • Sources, Sources everywhere

Click here for more information and to register for this free event by March 19 @ 5 p.m..
