Library introduces digital newsstand
 | |
Cheryl D'Mello
|
It is inevitable - the switch from the newsstand at the street corner to one online. Along with news about federal cuts and a brand new whiskey named "Cleveland" was the recent announcement in The Plain Dealer about our county library's new online newsstand, bristling with our favorite magazines.
Cuyahoga County Library patrons now have access to nearly 400 of the most popular magazines, accessible using a Windows or Mac computer as well as a wide variety of mobile devices, from Apple iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows phones to tablets and even the Kindle Fire, using a free Zinio Reader app. What a deal! All this from Zinio, the self-proclaimed "world's largest newsstand." Nationally, about 650 libraries offer the magazines today.
It seems hard to believe that the days of individual subscriptions, when magazines arrived folded neatly in your mailbox, may be gone forever. You once eagerly flipped through the crisp pages, browsing through the features and ads. Gone, perhaps, is the feel of glossy paper between your fingers. As with all things online, this will mean a slight change in lifestyle. Interestingly, the digital version is supposedly a boon for seniors, since these devices allow them to read the magazines in larger type.
If increased e-content means more voracious readers, this does seem worthwhile! Let's just wait and watch to see whether this revs up our readers, as reading styles morph and are transformed.
Sincerely,
Cheryl D'Mello
President

Local freelance writer conducts free writers' workshops
| Are you suffering from writer's block? Would like to learn how to write successful marketing messages for an online target market? Freelance writer Susan Fox has workshops coming up this month on both topics.
|
Attacking Writer's Block is first, on March 9 at 2 p.m. at the North Ridgeville Library. Fox, founder and president of Brainview Training Institute says she saw a need to help writers solve this common mental challenge. Her 60-minute, entertaining, hands-on workshop helps writers quickly see how to change viewpoints that are holding them back from creatively writing. "Most people are unaware that the brain interprets life situations from a minimum of four unique viewpoints or intentions. When a writer feels blocked from writing it's often because at least one brain quadrant's perspective temporarily holds the mind hostage," explains Fox. "This 'viewpoint hostage-holding' locks up the mind, causing writer's block." Fox's workshop reveals simple strategies to 'unlock' the mind so the writer can write again. Fox, a resident of Avon and a certified clinical hypnotist, bases her various workshop strategies on the 25 years' experience internationally coaching private clients, business executives and other professional hypnotists. Fox has conducted workshops using the brain's natural thinking style, knowledge and hypnosis with the Army Corps of Engineers, Kennewick Community Schools, Green River Community College, Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation Association, Toastmasters International, Northern Virginia Community College, Arthritis Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Society, National Guild of Hypnotists, International Hypnosis Hall of Fame, National Association of Transpersonal Hypnotists and at several U.S. conferences of professional hypnosis practitioners. "Now I want to pay forward at the library help for writers to unlock writer's block using this knowledge." To attend this free workshop, on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. contact the North Ridgeville Library located at 35700 Bainbridge Road, North Ridgeville, Ohio, 44039. RSVP with Susan Spivey, Reference Librarian (440) 327-8326. Seating is limited. Writing Creative Content that Delivers Results, Fox's second free workshop this month, is on March 19 at the Avon Lake Public Library. It explores writing successful marketing copy for websites. This workshop reveals common writing mistakes made in website copy and how to eliminate them. Do you know how to stop making ideal prospects click away? Using proven effective copywriting strategies, discover what attracts the right prospect and makes them your customers. Participants will receive a free marketing message worksheet that shows you what makes copy appeal to, interest and attract your ideal prospect. This workshop is aimed at local small businesses, but is open to all, free of charge. When:Tuesday March 19 9 to 11 a.m. Where: Avon Lake Public Library 32649 Electric Blvd. Avon Lake, Ohio 44012 Copywriters can learn more about the brain's four ways of thinking to improve marketing efforts by visiting Fox's website at www.yoursecretwishes.com.
