Past President's Message

Don't put newspapers on life support

Cliff Anthony
Cliff Anthony

Call me old fashioned. I'm not

ready to put the newspaper industry on life support.

Granted, newspapers are not raking in profits as they used to do 30-40 years ago. Blame the sluggish economy, decreasing circulation and the Internet. To cut costs, many newspapers are laying off their workers and scaling down their print editions. These are proactive measures to prevent any decrease in profits. Mind you, in most cases we're not talking about losses That is certainly the case at The Plain Dealer, which is still profitable, according to PD staff members' comments at more than one recent discussion.

If you had a sore toe, wouldn't you go to a doctor, spend money on treatment and make the toe healthy? That's exactly what publisher Aaron Kushner of The Orange County Register has done. Kushner, according to an Associated Press story, has revamped the publication by hiring 75 journalists, and he plans to hire 25 more. In other words, he's investing in the paper.

On the other hand, The Plain Dealer in Cleveland is chopping off its sore toe, so to speak, by slashing its newsroom staff by one-third. The newspaper's owner, Advance Publications Inc., is investing in Cleveland.com, which is a separate entity. One could surmise that Advance is betting on Cleveland.com to generate enough revenue to offset the projected drop in profit in The Plain Dealer. But the reality is different. The ad growth in digital editions doesn't match the ad loss in the print edition, according to an article titled "Newspapers: Building Digital Revenue Proves Painfully Slow," published by The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism. The piece was written by Rick Edmonds of the Poynter Institute,Emily Guskin, Tom Rosenstiel and Amy Mitchell of PEJ.

"In 2011, the online advertising was up $207 million industry-wide compared to 2010. Print advertising, though, was down $2.1 billion. So the print losses were greater than the digital gains by 10 to 1," they wrote. "That was even worse than a 7-to-1 ratio of print losses to digital gains in 2010. And during 2008 and 2009, steep declines in print were accompanied by small losses in online too."

It proves that going digital is not the panacea for newspapers' financial woes.

Recently, Cleveland.com redesigned its website. How did I know? It ran a half-page advertorial in its print counterpart, The Plain Dealer - not once, but twice. This is not an isolated incident. Check it out in any newspaper. The print edition is being used as a vehicle to drive readers to the digital edition.

"Going digital is oversimplification," argued Harlan Spector, chair of the Guild's Local-1, which represents PD workers, at a recent panel discussion held as part of the Save The Plain Dealer campaign. "Newspapers play a certain role in the community."

Many journalists embrace this profession to make a change, fully knowing they won't see the riches of a surgeon or a computer engineer. Ask any journalist, and he or she would say it fulfills a childhood dream to be a journalist. To paraphrase my SPJ board colleague and WTAM news anchor Tom Moore, "Journalists take a vow of poverty the moment they step in to the newsroom" because of their commitment to the community. Sadly, such commitment is scarce among newspaper publishers.

By ignoring the print medium, media moguls are doing a disservice to the community. The present financial bleeding, to a certain extent, is self-inflicted.

Journalists can do their part to keep the newspapers alive. For starters, stop writing newspapers' obituaries.

Sincerely,

Cliff Anthony

Columbus says goodbye
to "The Other Paper"

As of Jan. 31 the Columbus weekly entertainment publication The Other Paper will disappear.

The Dispatch Printing company purchased the paper in September 2011 from American Community Newspapers. The Dispatch Printing Company already had an entertainment weekly called Alive! and research showed that

  • there was too much similarity between the two publications
  • they both served the same audience, and
  • Alive! had a stronger presence in the market

SPJ's New America award honors public service journalism

The 2012 calendar year was full of stories about newcomers to America who faced important challenges.
SPJ honors the best of those stories with the New America Award.

Did you report on one of those issues?  You have until Feb. 7 to pay your $25 submission fee and enter it in the New America Award contest.  Explain why you chose to report on that subject.  What made it stand out? What resulted from the article?

The question for this year's SPJ

High School Essay Contest is ...

vertical logo

Why is it important that we have news media that are independent of the government?

Are you a high school student in grades 9 to 12 who has an answer to this question?  Write an essay of 300 to 500 words and submit it to SPJ by Mar. 7 and you could win a $1,000 scholarship.

Be warned. This contest is nationwide and you'll have some stiff competition. For some that will be the best reason of all to give it a try and for others it'll be the chance to express commitment to continuing the freedoms we have that many others don't.

Whatever your motivation you can download the entry form here and send it to:

"Trail of Betrayal": How Scripps got
the Boy Scouts of America story
How I got that story

The  Scripps National Investigative Team studied and revealed part of the Boy Scouts of America's confidential files. When they did so, they resurrected what had been shrouded and deeply buried. Their series lasted three days and still reverberates throughout our culture.

Join Lawan Hamilton, executive producer of the series, and Carol Guensburg, assistant content editor, on Jan. 16, from 2-3 p.m. for a webinar at Scripps News online, as they explore how they:

* Put together the team
* Created a multi-platform plan
* Conducted document review and analysis
* Used national scope and execution

Check out the full story here!

Register here by Jan. 15 for the webinar.

Mark of Excellence Award deadline Jan. 24

Are you enrolled in a U.S. college or university and studying for an academic degree  in 2012?  Have you never worked full-time as a journalist - outside of internships that is. Have you published or broadcast an article during the 2012 calendar year?

If you can answer yes to all three questions, here's your chance to enter the competition for a Society of Professional Journalists' Mark of Excellence Award. Every year, SPJ honors the best journalism by students. There are categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism.

It's a real challenge. To win the national competition you must run the gauntlet of regional competition and emerge in first place. Your entry will then advance to the national level and you'll have a chance at the top awards. Regional and national winners will both be recognized at the SPJ spring conferences.

You might have noticed our secretary-treasurer Tom Moore being quoted in Mike McIntyre's "Tipoff" column in The Plain Dealer on Jan. 5.

The quote came from Moore's Facebook page the preceding day, where he opined:

"Does anyone else think it's ironic that due to Ohio workplace smoking laws, those who smoke end up getting more fresh air during the day than the rest of us?"

Evidently McIntyre does not always check in with those he plans to quote this way, since Facebook is quasi-public and Twitter, totally so.

"It was a surprise to me to see my name in his column," Moore said. "Mike told me later on Facebook he is planning to occasionally put FB posts and Tweets from NE Ohioans in his column, so I'm the guinea pig, so to speak."

So if you're among those quotable local commentarians, it would be wise to be extra-careful what you say!

House of Horrors

Join, Robert Sberna Jan. 15 for a signing of his new book House of Horrors, the shocking true story of Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland Strangler.

Sowell's neighbors saw him as a nice guy, who gave barbecues in his front yard. If they had gone into his house, they would have found him living among the corpses of his victims. Instead, they blamed the growing stench on the sausage business next door.

House of Horrors is a piece of investigative journalism that draws us into the serial killer's mind through interviews with Sowell himself, members of his family and surviving victims.

Sberna is an investigative journalist who worked police beats and covered the courts in the Midwest. He's a contributor to The Washington Examiner, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Neoconomist, and Ohio Magazine.
