President's Message
'Tis the season to be jolly
Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello
Dear friends,
As I sat pondering what to write in my message this week, a group of women from our neighborhood burst into our living room, singing carols, dressed in festive attire. They were visiting each family. Spontaneously, my husband grabbed his guitar, my son and daughter their Santa hats, and off they went.

It took me back to childhood memories of Christmas in New Delhi, India, where a group of us carol singers, shepherded by our parish priest, visited homes and shopping centers. We even had the privilege of regaling the president with English and Hindi carols. All over the world, this festive season has its own special magic. Despite the calamities and horrific stories, this season is a reminder of hope for many of us.

This holiday season, as we share our gifts, let us resolve to also share our time, our talents, and reach out to those for whom the season is not so jolly - including the jobless, and those facing impending layoffs. As we slip into the coming year, let us step forth with a renewed hope and enthusiasm. Enjoy!

We will be off next week. See you again in the New Year!

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

President, SPJ Cleveland

Letter to the Editor
Will someone please buy The Plain Dealer?

My days in journalism were a long time ago, 1948-1968, but I still retain a deep interest in the flow of correct local information.

Multimillion-dollar donations to the art museum, hospitals, universities are worthy and expressive of a commendable civic spirit. Is it possible this love of Cleveland, our mother city, could be channeled into a search for citizens who could approach Advance Publications to buy the Plain Dealer?

Return the  paper to the city that it serves with new leadership. Reverse the downward trend. Multi-millions frantically dumped into losing political campaigns would be better used to  buy this wonderful journalistic institution. Koch brothers where are you? I don't agree with you but the arguments would be interesting if you bought The Plain Dealer

To share your concern for The Plain Dealer's future:
  1. Sign the petition here
  2. Subscribe to the paper here. There's even a digital edition.
  3. Advertise, and support those businesses that do the same.
  4. Go to the Facebook site  Save the Plain Dealer and sign up by hitting the "Like" button.
  5. Communicate! You can reach the chairman of Advance Publications Inc., Steven Newhouse,  through the Contact Us button at this website or the more detailed address and phone information given by the SavethePlainDealer Facebook page. Tell him how you value the paper.
"Trail of Betrayal": the Boy Scouts
of America story and how they did it
How I got that story

The  Scripps National Investigative Team studied and revealed part of the Boy Scouts of America's confidential files. When they did so, they resurrected what had been shrouded and deeply buried. Their series lasted three days and still reverberates throughout our culture.

Join Lawan Hamilton, executive producer of the series, and Carol Guensburg, assistant content editor, on Jan. 16, from 2-3 p.m. for a webinar at Scripps News online, as they explore how they:

* Put together the team
* Created a multi-platform plan
* Conducted document review and analysis
* Used national scope and execution

Check out the full story here!

Register here by Jan. 15 for the webinar.

How can your personality help you
to negotiate? Find out Jan. 10

How does your personality affect your emails and your negotiations?  Find out when the North East Ohio Society for Technical Communication presents Mary Ryba Knepper the evening of Jan. 10 at Parker Hannifin

Knepper will demonstrate how the tone of your emails is affected by the words you choose, how you structure them and what you emphasize. She will offer a "heuristic method" for creating email that forestalls the effects of your temperament or mood. She'll also show how the style with which you negotiate stems from your personality.

Currently adjunct faculty at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she teaches technical communication, Kneppner is also owner and president of Ryba Associates, a company committed to communication training and coaching.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and costs $20 for members of NEO STC and $25 for non-members.  For more information and to register, click here

Mark of Excellence Award deadline Jan. 24

Are you enrolled in a U.S. college or university and studying for an academic degree  in 2012?  Have you never worked full-time as a journalist - outside of internships that is. Have you published or broadcast an article during the 2012 calendar year?

If you can answer yes to all three questions, here's your chance to enter the competition for a Society of Professional Journalists' Mark of Excellence Award. Every year, SPJ honors the best journalism by students. There are categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism.

It's a real challenge. To win the national competition you must run the gauntlet of regional competition and emerge in first place. Your entry will then advance to the national level and you'll have a chance at the top awards. Regional and national winners will both be recognized at the SPJ spring conferences.

For more information and to fill in an entry form click here and good luck!
