President's Message
|
Debating the future of Cleveland PD
 | |
Cheryl D'Mello
|
Dear friends,
Many of us Clevelanders are used to sharing our morning coffee with our daily edition of The Plain Dealer. Both are fresh and invigorating! However, this may soon change: Cleveland could become the largest city in the country without a daily newspaper. Or, if a new campaign to save it is successful, it may not.
Everyone knows that newspapers are losing money as advertising revenues rapidly shrink. At the SPJ 2012 Excellence in Journalism conference in September, a special edition of "The Kalb Report" with host Marvin Kalb, discussed the state of today's news media with Casey Murrow (son of famed CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow), public radio legend Bob Edwards, New York Times Managing Editor Dean Baquet, and CBS News correspondent Erin Moriarty.
The results of a Pew Center report corroborated the view of the participants in the SPJ panel, who predicted that in the not-too-distant future, many newspapers may offer print copies only on Sundays and a couple of days during the week. According to Baquet, newspaper journalism is significantly weaker today, as a rule, than it was five or six years ago. Keeping newspapers alive will require much more of a public-service mentality on the part of newspaper executives.
Come and join us as we debate the future of Cleveland's media on Thursday, Nov. 15. (See more details in a separate item below, or the succinct summary at right.)
And if you want to root for the PD, go online to the "Save The Plain Dealer" Facebook site and sign the petition in support of our newspaper here.
Sincerely,
Cheryl D'Mello

| Take the 1st Amendment Free Food Festival Challenge! |
Susan Crowell, editor of weekly newspaper, Farm and Dairy, in Salem, Ohio and adviser to the campus newspaper, The Collegian, Grove City College, Grove City, Pa. has issued a challenge!
Recently she and 5 students who accompanied her to the National College Media Convention took part in the First Amendment Free Food Festival. The festival offered a free breakfast to those who signed away their First Amendment rights.
Students were in for a shock when they discovered they couldn't talk, meet with their friends or complain when the food was unavailable, or they were unfairly treated. They'd signed away all those rights. There was even a mock "jail" area for those that wouldn't obey.
Susan was so impressed by this powerful call to look at the freedoms we take so lightly that she wrote this blog, complete with video about the event. It stands as a challenge to the colleges and universities in the Cleveland area to arrange a similar demonstration.
The First Amendment Free Food Festival was started on Sept. 18 2006 by Michael Koretzky, a freelance journalist and volunteer adviser to the newspaper at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Since then it has spread nationwide.
