President's Message
|
Sandy refines use of crowdsourcing,
social media as newsgathering tools
 | |
Cheryl D'Mello
|
Dear friends,
Just as we thought we were being bombarded by frenzied political campaigns, along came hurricane Sandy. The storm took precedence, as people's lives and livelihoods were swept away.
We have been deluged by a flood of stories, not just through the traditional media, but also through social media. We looked to see what friends had posted on Facebook, searched through live blogs, zillions of videos that were uploaded, tweets and Instagrams that kept friends and family all over the globe informed about Sandy and the status of loved ones. It was a time when people on the streets became reporters performing feats of citizen journalism.
One of the lessons news agencies have learned from the Sandy experience is that in order to have the most timely information, they need to assign a person to monitor social media. It is true that some of the most up-to-date and electrifying information about Sandy came in through social media.
However, some news agencies made the mistake of not verifying some of this information. That was the second lesson learned from the storm: verify and screen all information. Instantaneous information is not necessarily correct information. We certainly learn, as we go along, that even though the news medium may change, we still need to verify our sources and facts, and never take truth for granted.
We have received a call for help from Staten Islander Ryan Murphy, the communications manager for RTDNA (Radio Television Digital News Association). He has organized a local marathon and is appealing to RTDNA and SPJ members for help for the residents of Staten Island affected by the storm. It's a credit to his efforts that the marathon's original fundraising goal of $500 has already been far exceeded, but we all know that far more is needed. To make a donation, please go to this website or email him at ryanm@rtdna.org.
And yes, all roads lead to the polls on Tuesday!
Sincerely,
Cheryl D'Mello

ESPN producer Dwayne Bray to speak at Kent State University Nov. 5 |
Nov. 5 at 2:15 p.m., Dwayne Bray, senior coordinating producer for ESPN, will speak at Kent State University on how ESPN balances journalism and its business relationships with the sports conferences and leagues whose games they broadcast.
"Dwayne's experience can help students learn about what it means to be a sports journalist today. And really, what it means to be a journalist in any area," says Sue Valerian, an adjunct instructor in Kent State's School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She was one of those who arranged Bray's visit with the goal of increasing Kent State students' perspective and adding to their knowledge and insight.
"Several of my students want to go into sports broadcasting or write about sports." she stated. "Either way, Dwayne has experience in both areas. And today, the lines are blurred between print and broadcast. Students need to be proficient in both writing and shooting video."
Bray is an East Cleveland native whose road to ESPN started with a stint as a courts reporter for the Los Angeles Times (1993-95), wound on to assistant metro editor (1995-97) and sports editor (1997-2000) of the Dayton Daily News, and then to assistant sports editor (2004-05), sports editor (2004-05) and deputy managing editor (2005-06) of the Dallas Morning News.
The event will take place at FirstEnergy Auditorium in Franklin Hall at Kent State University. It is open to the public at no charge. Kent State students will tweet live from the event using the hashtag #brayatjmc.

| Studio SPJ- Understanding Fair Use |
Those of us who know about the doctrine of "fair use" but are secretly unsure about how to apply it, can tune into the online radio show Studio SPJ, Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m. on BlogTalkRadio (see link below).
Hosted by former SPJ national president ethics committee chairman Kevin Smith the show will feature guests Patricia Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi, professors at American University and the authors of "Reclaiming Fair Use - How to Put Balance Back in Copyright."
Aufderheide, Jaszi and two colleagues published a study this past July that revealed how a great number of journalists don't completely understand the meaning of "fair use" of copyrighted materials - which is understandable, given that copyright owners often claim infringement when it's really fair use.
"This is extremely valuable information, (for journalists) to be able to do their jobs better, said Smith during a recent interview. "I hope to see a set of principals evolve, which can make it easier to know what's the right thing to do."
So if you have ever silently admitted to yourself that you'd love to be absolutely sure you're using "fair use" properly, click here on Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m.

| U.S. Election Issues: Race and gender in 2012, Nov. 5 at John Carroll University |
The 12-day U.S. Presidential Election Reporting Seminar will be making a stop at John Carroll University on Nov. 5 for a panel discussion about "U.S. Election Issues: Race and Gender in 2012"
This panel has been organized by the East-West Center for a group of 11 foreign journalists from Afghanistan, China, Hong Kong, India, Nepal, New Zealand and Vietnam, who are in the U.S. to cover the presidential election. This is the Cleveland leg of a journey that also visits Tampa and Washington.
In an election as tight as this one, questions of equality can become deciding factors. The visiting journalists have asked to hear about these issues from our Cleveland panel, and the foreign journalists will be given a chance to ask questions of the panelists before any questions are taken from the audience.
The panel will ask and answer:
How is the U.S. Presidential Election dealing with the most urgent and important issues in front of ethnic and racial communities?
How are women reacting to the way both the Democratic and Republican parties have been focusing on gender related issues?
This panel discussion will be moderated by SPJer and Writer's Week editor Carrie Buchanan, assistant professor of communication at John Carroll University.
Panelists include:
- Arlene Anderson, Executive Director, Cleveland Branch NAACP
- Mike Brickner, Communications and Policy Director, ACLU Ohio
- Penny Jeffrey, President, League of Women's Voters Cleveland
- Marsha A. Mockabee, President and CEO, Urban League Cleveland
Designed to make international coverage of the election deeper and stronger, this event is part of a professional study and reporting tour put together by the East-West Center for foreign print, broadcast and online journalists who will be reporting from some of the key states in the 2012 U.S. presidential election. The public is welcome to attend.
When: Nov. 5 from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m.
Where: at John Carroll University, Lombardo Student Center, Jardine Room, 1 John Carroll Blvd (formerly North Park Blvd), University Heights 44118.
Cost: This event is open to the public at no charge.

SPJ Board Member and Writers Week editor Carrie Buchanan is excited to announce that 12 of her 20 introductory journalism students at John Carrol University have been published on the Heights Observer website.
The students wrote from a "local angle" about election campaigns, each focusing on one of a wide range of candidates, from Obama and Romney, Brown and Mandel, to the state legislature and judiciary, as well as county council and judiciary contests. Only the ones with local aspects in the Heights were run in the Observer. Some excellent stories that didn't run were set in Parma, Lakewood and out-of-town counties.
Click Here to read the articles, then email here with your comments. Says Buchanan, "I welcome feedback from fellow SPJers." She promises to pass on your encouragement and advice to her class.
