President's Message

An Auburn Ohio

Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello

Dear friends,

Fall is surely the most beautiful time of the year in North East Ohio as green turns to gold.  Luminous reds, ripe oranges, and rich yellows color our world, and I can't help but recall the words of poet Joyce Kilmer:

I think I shall never see

A poem as lovely as a tree

Homeowners of course, grumble as they grapple for hours with each new mound of crisp crackling leaves with their blowers and rakes.

Meanwhile, as we swing towards the elections, we are inundated with a deluge of information about candidates, with their game of mudslinging and battering. The telephone keeps ringing and cards continue to slink into our mailboxes and homes. Presidential debates take center stage.

Today our very own Plain Dealer offers us readers a chance to jump into the conversation online with its reporters at Cleveland.com. If you are not a registered user, fill out the quick form at tinyurl.com/clevedebate to set up your free account. This is one debate we can join, so jump in. And yes, we do hope the best person wins!

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello

  • Francisco Negron, general counsel, National School Boards Association
  • Frank LoMonte, executive director, Student Press Law Center

Robert Sberna- Book Launch and Signing Oct. 29
House of Horrors

Just in time for Halloween, Robert Sberna is launching his book "House of Horrors, The Shocking True Story of Anthony Sowell, the Cleveland Strangler."

Sowell's neighbors saw him as a nice guy who gave barbecues in his front yard. If they had gone into his house, they would have found him living among the corpses of his victims. Instead, they blamed the growing neighborhood stench on the sausage business next door.

House of Horrors is true story that draws us into the serial killer's mind through interviews with Sowell himself, members of his family and surviving victims.

Sberna is an investigative journalist who worked police beats and covered the courts in the Midwest. He's a contributor to The Washington Examiner, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Neoconomist, and Ohio Magazine.

The book launch and signing will take place Oct. 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Strongsville's Old Town Hall, 18825 Royalton Rd., just west of Pearl Rd.
