President's Message

Meet your new SPJ national leaders

Cheryl D'Mello
Cheryl D'Mello
Dear friends,

I thought I should introduce you to some of SPJ's national leaders, whom I met at the Excellence in Journalism 2012 Conference. This year, SPJ introduced "One Member, One Vote" elections for national officers. A total of 830 votes were cast, which accounted for about 11 percent of the 7,371 ballots emailed to members.

SPJ's immediate past president is John Ensslin. The new president is Sonny Albarado, who is projects editor at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Little Rock, Ark. See his most recent blog entry, taking exception to the arrests of working journalists at the Occupy anniversary protests, on the national SPJ website here.

The president-elect, who will take over next year in the top spot, is David Cuillier, assistant professor in the Department of Journalism at the University of Arizona. Some of you may have met him when he came to Cleveland just over a year ago to give a Freedom of Information training. He spent much of the summer driving around the country training people to use FOIA, the federal access law, and other laws that help journalists get information.

Dana Neuts, a freelance journalist in Kent, Wash., is now secretary-treasurer; Neil Ralson is vice president of campus chapter affairs; Carl Corry is director at-large; Mary Kenney and Meg Wagner are campus representativesKym Fox was re-elected as campus adviser at-large.

Patricia Gallagher Newberry

Our very own Region 4 was

among those where

a new regional director was elected: Patricia Gallagher Newberry, senior lecturer and coordinator of special events and internships for the Journalism Program at Miami University, Ohio.

We at SPJ look forward to a year of new leadership, ideas and vision that will take us to the next level of professional journalism!

Sincerely,

Cheryl D'Mello
President

Ohio SPJ Awards a terrific event
Tom Moore at SPJ awards
Tom Moore, the man in the middle, with Mr. Redlegs and Rosie Red at the Cincinnati Reds' ballpark

Many of Ohio's top journalists made the trip to Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 30, where about 75 people gathered for the 2012 Ohio SPJ Awards. SPJ Cleveland chapter Secretary-Treasurer Tom Moore represented the chapter at the annual event, including being the co-master of ceremonies along with Tom McKee, board member of the Cincinnati chapter.

Those who attended were treated to a buffet lunch, the awards ceremony, as well as a tour of the ballpark, home to the National League Central Division Champion Cincinnati Reds. One of the tour groups was joined by Reds mascots Mr. Redlegs and Rosie Red (pictured with Moore in front of the entrance to the Reds' clubhouse).

There were numerous winners from the Cleveland area.  The two top daily papers are both local, as The Plain Dealer won best large daily, and Elyria's Chronicle-Telegram won the statewide award for best small daily. For a complete list of winners, go to ohiospjawards.org . If you want to enter your work from 2012 in next year's awards, keep an eye on the web site for the Call for Entries early in 2013.

The awards are administered jointly by the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati SPJ chapters. The location of each year's awards event is rotated between the three cities.  Next year, the event will be held in the Columbus area.
