Thank you to everyone who donated cat food, dog food, blankets, toys, treats or money to the AHNA Annual Holiday Pet Food Drive. New, State of the Art Ultrasound Adds Additional Diagnostic Capability for Your Pet
Animal Hospital of North Asheville recently upgraded our ultrasound capability with a new machine for the fourth time. Why did we spend over $80,000 to upgrade again? Because the new ultrasound machine produces amazingly detailed images that can improve our ability to make quick and accurate diagnoses. This ability can make the difference between life and death for your pet, and that makes us happy. We have always been a leader in ultrasonography in Western NC, and to really use our high level skill at ultrasound we need state of the art equipment. Developing technology continues to improve the ability of ultrasound machines to provide the diagnostic level of detail we want for your pet. The level of detail our new machine provides can enable us to make an earlier diagnosis of problems including bladder stones, kidney disease, intestinal disease, heart disease, adrenal disease, liver disease and abdominal masses. What Happens When My Pet Gets a Cavity?
By Dr. Dave Thompson Whenever I go to my own dentist for evaluation and cleaning appointments, my hygienist always asks, "Dr. Thompson, are you having any problems or sensitivity with your teeth?" Unfortunately, information on whether pets are feeling pain is much more difficult to obtain. When I am admitting my pet patients for dental evaluation and cleaning appointments, I always ask the parents/family members of my patients if they have noticed any symptoms of oral discomfort. Even when a cat or dog has a dental problem that we know is uncomfortable or painful, the family seldom observes any evidence of a problem. It is well documented that pets, having originated from wild animals, often try to hide discomfort and chronic pain because it would be viewed as a sign of weakness by other animals who might try to take advantage of this weakness. AHNA Now Has Vaccine Against H3N2 Canine Influenza
AHNA now has a vaccine to help prevent the new strain of flu (H3N2) that affected many dogs in the Asheville area last summer. In November 2015, the United States Department of Agriculture granted a conditional license for the vaccine to address outbreaks. This is a killed virus vaccine which requires two doses, 3 weeks apart in adult dogs and puppies. The series cannot be started in puppies until they are 8 weeks old. Once initial immunity is established by the two vaccines, the pet will need an annual booster. This vaccine will offer your dog the best protection possible at this time, but no vaccine is 100% effective. Click Here to learn more about the new vaccine.
