20 Years of Fathead

Fathead 20 Years Deep CDFathead, one of Canada's greatest blues bands, is celebrating 20 years together by releasing a greatest hits CD: "Fathead 20 Years Deep".

Featuring standout tracks culled from all seven of their previous albums, there are also two tracks that feature Fathead backing Chicago blues ace Little Mack Simmons.

I saw Fathead perform for my first time quite by accident. My wife norma & I were attending a blues show in Toronto at The Silver Dollar back around 1996 or 1997 and the club had temporarily lost it's liquor license. We decided to walk down Spadina to Grossman's Tavern to get a drink between sets.

When we went in there was this blues band with a great singer and a really cool harmonica player but we had no idea who they were. I only realized a few months later we had seen Fathead in their early days.

This sort of thing happened to me a few times when I was getting into blues. I have walked into Chicago's Diner on Queen Street and the sign outside said "someone" and the C Notes who's name I did not recognize - it was Chuck Jackson. On another occasion I happened upon a great harp player who looked a bit like Steve Martin - it was Mark Bird Stafford!

FatheadWe started seeing Fathead perform live more and more because they were so good. I became friends with the guys in the band and ended up studying harmonica with Al Lerman for about five years. Al is one of the best and most under rated harp players in the business! They played in Orangeville for the first time at the old Mad Hatter Pub in back in 2001.

Fathead has played our festival many times over the years.

In fact the publicity photo to the right was shot by Paul Dimmock at our fest right behind Orangeville Town Hall.

With two Juno Awards and numerous other music industry trophies to their credit, Fathead has played the top blues rooms, concert halls and music festivals from coast to coast. Their music is steeped heavily in the blues, married with elements of r&b, funk and soul, and possesses a unique ensemble sound that is immediately recognizable as their own.

Check out this video of Fathead playing the main stage at Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival in 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9EoOW-KTVY

Congratulations guys!
