Cybersecurity

Today's world is more connected than ever. The Internet touches almost all aspects of everyone's daily life, whether we realize it or not. Yet, for all its advantages, being constantly plugged in increases the risk of theft, fraud, and abuse. As we become more reliant on modern technology, we also become more vulnerable to cyberattacks such as corporate security breaches, spear phishing, and social media fraud.

In light of the risk and potential consequences of cyber events, strengthening the security and resilience of cyberspace has become an important mission. The easiest way to work towards a safer cyberworld is to work together. Below is a list of links where you can find information to help keep you or your business safe from cybercrime.

The recently updated National Institute of Standards and Technology Cybersecurity Framework highlights best practices. From "US-CERT" (7/31/2015)

Investing In The Future
Lapeer County Local College Access Network

To increase the post-secondary educational attainment in Lapeer County, the Lapeer County College Access Network (LCCAN) has set a goal for 2016 to increase Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion across Lapeer County. If you have a high school senior, you are encouraged to attend the Show Me The Money open house event on February 4, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. at the Education and Technology Center, 690 North Lake Pleasant Road, Attica MI.

What can my business or organization do to help? Post the PDF for the Show Me The Money open house on your website, Facebook/Twitter page and in your business or organization. Imagine students hear at school that they need to complete the FAFSA form. Then everywhere the students go, including the dentist, eye doctor, bank, restaurant, movie theater, stores, etc., they are reminded of the importance of FAFSA completion. The more places students and parents can be reminded of this open house and the importance of completing the FAFSA form by March 1st, the better. Even if a student does not need loans, they still need to complete the FAFSA form to qualify for scholarships.

Additional ways to help with the 2/4/16 Show Me The Money Open House?
  • Promote the event by posting the Show Me The Money flyer/sign. Get it HERE.
  • Do you offer scholarships? Set up a table at the open house to share your scholarship opportunities.
  • Donate money or goods to be used for food and give-a-ways.
  • Volunteer

What is a LCAN? Local College Access Networks (LCANs) are community-based college access alliances supported by a team of community and education leaders representing K-12, higher education, the nonprofit sector, government, business, and philanthropy. These coalitions are committed to building a college-going culture and dramatically increasing college readiness, participation, and completion rates within their community. LCANs coordinate and expand programs, services and resources that lower barriers preventing students from pursuing postsecondary educational opportunities.

LCANs organize community leaders around a singular vision: Increase the community's post-secondary educational attainment level to 60 percent by the year 2025 in order to lay the foundation for a vibrant economy, healthy community, and strong workforce equipped to compete in a 21st century global economy. An LCAN sets goals focused on student success, establishes a system of data gathering and analysis, reports results, and hold partners accountable for performance.

It is important to note a Local College Access Network is not a new program of the community or of one particular organization within the network. LCANs primarily coordinate and mobilize college access efforts rather than direct services to students and families.
