It is easy to create a lush, green, great-looking lawn and keep it that way all season long. Just follow these steps and you will soon be enjoying your lawn this summer.
Step 1: Apply an early-season, pre-emergent weed preventer anytime between NOW and April 15th. This step prevents summertime weeds from germinating. It is important to apply this step before the lawn starts to green-up, so get this down before sustained warm weather starts for the season. Do not do this if your going to reseed your lawn.
Step 2: Apply a fertilizer with broad leaf weed control between April 1st-June 30th. This step provides nutrients for thick, sturdy grass and promotes strong root systems. It also controls all broad leaf weeds. This is also the time to start applying iron on your lawn. Application of iron 3 times during the season will keep your lawn green.
Step 3: Apply a winterizing fertilizer between September 1st-October 31st to protect your lawn from Winter stress and to promote vigorous root development. Your grass will green-up faster the following Spring with a winterizing fertilizer.
A Couple additional tips:
First, use a spot weed control product to control dandelions, chickweed, knotweed and many other broadleaf weeds as-needed during the season. Hose-end, pump and trigger sprayers are available. This can be especially useful if your neighbors don't care for their lawns as well as you do, since weeds tend to travel.
Second, make sure your mower blades are sharp at the beginning of the season and adjust the cut height up a notch if it is unusually hot. Dull mower blades and short cuts distress your lawn.
Caring for you own lawn and keeping it looking nice all season with these steps takes about 8 hours of your time between early Spring and late Fall. It is an easy do-it yourself project that can make you proud of your home.
