With shorter days and cooler temperatures just around the corner many people have long forgotten lawn fertilizer, weed control and aeration. Here are a few fall lawn tips to help prepare your lawn for winter and give it a head start for next spring.
FERTILIZE: August, September, and October are important months to fertilize your lawn in preparation for next spring. Try Scott's Turf Builder Fall Lawn Fertilizer once in early fall and again 6-8 weeks later to build stronger, deeper roots for winter and ensure a thicker, greener lawn next spring.
AERATE: Although aeration is most common in the spring, autumn is perhaps the most suitable time to aerate. Aerating helps prepare the lawn to absorb more of winter's moisture, gives growing roots more room to grow, and combined with a slow-release fertilizer helps give your lawn a head-start on next spring. Aerating can be as simple as poking holes in the lawn by walking over it with spiked shoes, or for lawns in greater need, core aeration - where "plugs" of soil are pulled from the ground to let larger amounts of air, water and fertilizer in.
DETHATCH: Dethatching goes hand-in-hand with aerating and helps the lawn breathe. Now is the perfect time to rake deeply, taking care to remove dead grass, twigs, seeds and clippings that have accumulated at the base of the grass during the dry summer months.
WATER: It's also important to continue watering your lawn through the summer and well into fall. For best results water during the cooler parts of the day, deeply and infrequently. Now and through winter, deep root water trees, which will otherwise steal water from your lawn as they prepare for a long winter.
WEED CONTROL: Watch out! Many broadleaf weeds grow actively in the autumn months making it important to focus on weed control. Ace Winterize Plus Weed Control is a great fertilizer to use when noticing weeds. If you pull weeds by hand, make sure you get under the roots to remove them completely.
Spend a little time on your lawn using these fall lawn-care tips and you will have a lush and vibrant lawn next spring, a lawn to turn your neighbors green with envy.
