KIMBERLY'S ITEM OF INTEREST |
It's not just a little mosquito bite any more. Mosquitoes can carry West Nile Virus and Encephalitis.
To help in combating mosquitoes, we carry QUICK KILL MOSQUITO BITS, a biological mosquito control.
Mosquito bits is a highly selective microbial insecticide effective against mosquitoes in a variety of habitats. When spread over the containerized water surface the BITS release a biological mosquito larvacide at the water's surface. This larvacide gradually settles in the water where it is eaten by mosquito larvae growing there. MOSQUITO BITS may be used in all types of containerized standing water sites where mosquito larvae grow. The BITS will give a quick kill within 24 hours.
Apply to containerized standing water found near the house such as:
- water garden
- flower pots
- rain barrels
- roof gutters
- bird bath
- tree holes
- unused swimming pools
- old automobile tires
- animal water troughs
This product may be applied to areas that contain aquatic life, fish and plants. May be applied to areas used by or in contact with humans, animals, horses, livestock pets, birds or wildlife. Exception is finished, treated human drinking water sources. |

What's the Big Deal About Paint??? | |
Three years ago Schemper's Ace Hardware, in an effort to provide customer service and convenience, joined a program to become a drop off location for old, used paint. We also added Visions "Workhorse" paint, a line of quality remanufactured latex paint.
In the beginning, we were only able to take back and recycle certain types of paint. The program has grown and we can now collect the following architectural coatings in 5 gallon containers or less:
- Interior and exterior latex, acrylic, water-based, alkyd, oil-based, enamel (including textured coatings)
- Deck coatings, floor paints (including elastomeric) primers, sealers, under coaters & stains
- Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, urethanes (single component)
- Concrete/masonry water proofers, wood sealers and repellents (not tar or bitumen-based)
- Metal coatings, rust preventatives as well as field and lawn paints
- All paint must have a legible label, not leaking, and sealed tight.
Why recycle paint? Did you know that of all hazardous waste received by municipal programs for residents and small businesses, 50% is paint. Conversation began in 2003 between paint manufacturers, recyclers, state and federal governments and others to find a cooperative solution for managing post-consumer paint. The American Coatings Association (ACA) participated, and the dialogue led to drafting of the model, state-level, industry supported law. Currently Oregon and California have passed the industry-supported paint stewardship law. California's went into effect October 19, 2012. "PaintCare" was created by the ACA in 2009 when Oregon passed the paint stewardship model law. PaintCare is a non-profit stewardship organization that sets up the paint recycling programs for manufacturers and is governed by the Board of Architectural paint manufacturers. "CalRecycle", a State oversight agency, reviews PaintCare's program plan and annual reports. Funding the program is done by financing through a per can "PaintCare Recovery Fee" added to the product price of each container sold. (half pint or less = no charge, more than half pint to 1 less than 1 gallon= $0.35, 1 gallon= $0.75, more than 1 gallon to 5 gallons= $1.60). Manufacturers collect the fees, and report sales and pay the fee to PaintCare. Funding covers the cost of paint collection, transportation, and recycling, as well as outreach and administration. These fees are now attached to every said container of paint sold in California and is not a "Tax". The potential uses for collected paint are as follows; They can be: - Reused
- Donated
- Blended into recycled-content paint (latex)
- Sold domestically and exported.
- Can be turned into cement/asphalt blends (latex)
- Landscaping material (latex)
- Blended into fuel for cement kilns (oil-based).
Schemper's Ace Hardware gives you a convenient place to recycle your old paint and become a part of the PaintCare program helping to reduce hazardous waste and keep our precious earth green. Every little bit helps!!

Aphids | |
'Tis the season for Aphids. Look on your plants; do you have any?
Aphids are soft, pear shaped, very tiny insects that are born with wings, which fall off when they get to their food source, your plants. Aphids extract the fluids from your plants, making them weak and can cause your beautiful plants to die. Aphids feed on mostly fruit, vegetable plants, flowers, ornamentals and shade trees. If you happen to see ants in your plants that means you most likely have aphids also. Ants like the sticky honeydew that aphids excrete.
To eliminate Aphids we recommend using a systemic insecticide in spray or granular form.
Systemic spray insecticide is sprayed onto the leaves allowing the insecticide to absorb into the stem and down into the roots. It will not go into the flower. If you choose the systemic spray we recommend applying during the morning or evening when you see the aphids. Applying the spray in the middle of the day, or during the hottest part of the day will cause the leaves to fry and burn.
Granular systemic insecticide is sprinkled around the base of the plant and worked into the soil. The insecticide will travel through the roots, stems and into the leaves, but will not go into the flower.
There are also systemic insecticides available for edible plants.
A few products that we would recommend are:
- Bayer 32oz Vegetable &Garden Insecticide Control (for edibles)
- Ortho BugBGon Garden Insecticide RTU (Spray)
- Bayer RTU Rose & Flower Insect (Spray)
- Insect +Fertilizer Rosecare 5LB (Granules)
- Neem Oil (Spray)
- Rose RX 3 IN 1 RTS QT(Spray)
Take a stand against aphids and insects. Let us help you choose the best systemic insecticide for your gardening needs. |
