Butterfly Gardening | | |
Butterflies are one of the joys of the spring and summer seasons. They are enjoyable to watch as they flit and fly among the garden flowers. Children are in awe of the bright colors of the butterfly and love to chase after them. So why not encourage these beautiful insects to visit your garden by planting a few of these flowers that we sell in our garden department?
To attract butterflies year after year, plant perennials such as Lilac, Gaillardia, Lavender, Penstemon, Hibiscus or a Butterfly Bush. The vibrant colors of these plants attract the butterfly and the multitude of blossoms provides an abundance of nectar to feed them. My favorite is the Butterfly Bush. They are available in white, pink, purple, red or blue and in a variety of sizes.
 If bright, simple, instant color is more your style, then choose annuals such as Pentas, Petunias, Phlox, Cosmos, Salvia and Verbena. These flowers are available in a rainbow of colors that you can mix or match to your liking. I can recommend the tall blue salvia, the medium-height red verbena and the trailing white petunias. (Aside from attracting butterflies, you will also have a jump start on your 4th of July patriotic garden.)
The right plant choices for your beautiful, colorful garden and you can enjoy butterflies fluttering around your garden.
