Let's Prepare your Garden for Winter | |
A Great conversational piece these days is ...what's up with
the weather? It's DECEMBER and sunny...well it was yesterday! But since winter is here, we need to think and plan ahead for your spring lawn and garden.
- The best time to fertilize is now. Use a lawn fertilizer with a higher first number(nitrogen) and lower second (phosphorus) and third number(Potash). California actually took away phosphorus that was in most fertilizers, so you may see a bag containing the number 16-0-8 on them. A good example and something that can be used now is Crabgrass preventer with fertilizer which is a 30-0-4. If you
want a crabgrass preventer, but do not want fertilizer in it we also have AMAZE:Grass and Weed Preventer as well as Weed Impede which will both get the job done. - With your vegetable garden and annuals it's a good idea to remove the spent plants and vines from the surface to prevent the summer feeding insects from laying eggs in the winter. Remove all the fallen leaves from your plants and around the roots, so insects do not lay eggs, reproduce, and ruin your plants.
- As the season progresses and the weather becomes colder, mulch the soil around plants. This will help keep roots cold and control the effects of extreme temperatures changes during the winter freeze.
- Protect the tender bark on young trees. Keep burlap or tree guard around the roots to keep critters from gnawing on them.
 - These preventative measures will help you to reap great rewards next spring.
