Charging Ahead

This summer, Development Assistant Jonathan Assink and I have been going through old files and cleaning out the storage closet in the high school entryway. We've unearthed some real treasures along the way such as a stack of Advanced Composition Devotion Booklets from the early 2000's. While it's been fun to revisit the past, there have been things we've needed to let go of like the school brochures from the 1990's

This year one of those things was our mascot. We let go of the Crusaders in exchange for the Chargers. While for many of you it has been a difficult transition, we encourage you to join us as we embrace the future. With that, we re-branded the golf tournament to The Chargers Golf Classic and even used "Go Chargers!" as the pass code at the beverage stand. Next on the list of things to update as we look ahead: it's time to re-brand the GreenSheet.

The GreenSheet has long been the school's weekly communication with parents and friends about school happenings and announcements. Maybe you remember you or one of your siblings dutifully carrying it home and delivering it to your parents--or consistently forgetting it buried in the bottom of your backpack. In 2014 it went digital, serving the same purpose with ability to access it via email - no more long sheets of green paper.

As we continue to embrace the new mascot and look to the future, we are re-branding the GreenSheet to the Charger News. And don't worry, it will still be filled with the same great content.  If you're interested in keeping up with the Shoreline Christian weekly happenings, reply to this email and let us know you want to subscribe to the Charger News.

Go Chargers!

Long story short: I attended my undergrad at Western Washington University and found an amazing church in Bellingham, Oikos Fellowship, and an awesome pastor who mentored me there.  I graduated and have been living in South Korea for the past two years.  I also found a great small international church there where I served and even got to serve in some Korean orphanages there.  I ended up working teaching English to employees and Executives of Hyundai/KIA at their headquarters and boy it was a challenge, but it was good!  I've been back in Seattle almost 4 months now and I'm looking to get my Masters in International Community Development at Northwest University (where I work).  I recently found out I got a part time job at Seattle Central College working with International Students, but I also applied for a position of International Student Advisor at Northwest University and I'm still waiting to hear back.  Since I've been back in the U.S., I found a great church (Anchor Church, which is a sister church of my church in Bellingham) and I have been enjoying being back, seeing friends, and volunteering at Union Gospel Mission downtown.

Gifting Appreciated Stock:  It's a win-win!

Submitted by the SCS Finance Committee

Given just how far the stock market has risen in the past several years, many investors are fortunate enough to have investments that have appreciated in value substantially. That's good news for the value of your investment portfolio, but if you own those investments in a taxable account, then you'll have to pay what could be a substantial amount of tax on the capital gains that those investments have earned since you bought them. Even at preferential long-term capital-gains rates, the prospect of paying as much as 20% of your hard-earned gains to the IRS probably isn't the kind of charity you had in mind.

To avoid that capital-gains liability, smart taxpayers use special provisions of the tax laws that allow you to use appreciated stock to make charitable gifts. When you give appreciated stock that you've held for longer than a year, you're allowed to take the full current market value of the shares as an itemized charitable deduction on your tax return.  Read More>>

Presidential Campaign

We've  had great response to the Presidential Campaign. Thank you to all who have contributed! Our goal is $500,000 and so far we've raised $349,202.

We still need your help! Please consider supporting the education and spiritual formation of the next generation so they too can be transforming influences in the world.

Memorial Garden Plaques
In celebration of our 60th anniversary, a space was created for stories - past and present - a memorial garden.

Now we need stories!  You can tell your story on a plaque that will be attached to the faces of the benches.  Learn more here.

Does your company have a matching gifts program? Boeing, Microsoft, and Expedia are just a few of the many companies that offer this benefit to their employees.  With a match you'll double your giving to the school! Check with your Human Resources Department to find out if your company's commitment to their community extends to donating money to non-profits.
