Action and Hope

This is a busy time of year. Spring break is only a week away and then it's a sprint to the end of the school year. Our seniors are looking beyond these halls and making future plans. Grandparents' Day is tomorrow. Jog-a-thon and the golf tournament are only months away.

We're also looking forward to the next school year. Re-enrollment is underway. Inquiries, tours and new applications are keeping the office hopping. We're tracking ahead of last year for enrollment. There's excitement and energy. We continue to strategize, find ways to improve, and take action to move the school forward.

It's an exciting time of year as we finish out the events of the current school year and look forward to the next. We are thankful for the work God has done this year in the lives of our students, families, staff and faculty. But we also continue to seek his leading and trust he has more work to do in the future at SCS.

Presidential Campaign

We've  had great response to the Presidential Campaign. Thank you to all who have contributed! Our goal is $500,000 and so far we've raised $250,642.

We still need your help! Please consider supporting the education and spiritual formation of the next generation so they too can be transforming influences in the world.

Featured Alumni:  Kendra (Hoekzema) Buist
Submitted by Kendra (Hoekzema) Buist (Class of 2006)

Kendra Hoekzema is a second generation alumnus from SCS; her parents Ken and Carla (Bierlink) Hoekzema graduated in 1979.  While at SCS Kendra played basketball, participated in band and choir, and was a senior class president.  She learned of her love for science and math in classes with Mr. Roosendaal and Mr. Van Hal, especially in Mr. Van Hal's Advanced Biology class. The education Kendra received from SCS has been invaluable in her life after high school.

After graduating from SCS in 2006, Kendra attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI and double majored in Biology and Biochemistry. She especially loved her laboratory classes and knew that she wanted to pursue research. In between her Junior and Senior year, she did an internship through the National Science Foundation at Oregon State University and first dipped her toes in the genetics field studying sperm whale population genetics.  This opportunity lead to a graduate student position at OSU, so she moved back to the Pacific Northwest. Kendra received her Master's from OSU (2013) doing genetics research on native Oregon fishes while also teaching some online classes and serving a term as the president for the Fisheries and Wildlife Graduate Student Association.

Kendra has been back in the Seattle area since last fall and is now working for UW in a lab that does genomic research on Autism and she is having fun learning a new field and applying her genetics skills to a very important human disease.

At Calvin, Kendra met her husband Eric Buist, a Grand Rapids native now converted to a Pacific Northwesterner.  They were married in 2010 before moving down to Oregon for graduate school.  Eric is a freelance videographer who has been focusing on craft beer related videos (check out Hopstories.com).  While in Oregon they adopted a dog, Kona, and they now live in Shoreline. Kendra and Eric will be adding to the next generation of SCS students as they are expecting their first child in September.

Representative Kagi and Early Learning
Submitted by Barb Reinsma, SCS Preschool Director

I was excited on the morning of March 10. I was going to meet Representative Ruth Kagi and hear her vision for Early Learning in the State of Washington. Shoreline Christian School and the Washington Federation of Independent Schools were hosting an event for teachers, parents, and administrators to learn more about how the Washington legislature is working to shape the future of early learning in our state. I was excited because Verna Alberda, the Director of our child-care center, and I are at the tail end of the Early Achievers accreditation of the preschool and childcare.

Back on a warm June evening in 2012, Verna and I attended one...Keep Reading

Memorial Garden Plaques
In celebration of our 60th anniversary, a space was created for stories - past and present - a memorial garden.

Now we need stories!  You can tell your story on a plaque that will be attached to the faces of the benches.  Learn more here.
