Jessica Hoogerhyde, class of 2013, and the recipient of the Dennis Roosendaal Scholarship in 2013, shared with us what the scholarship has meant to her.
Last year I had the honor of receiving the Dennis Roosendaal Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to those who have shown a desire to serve others, and plan on pursuing a career in math or science. Receiving the scholarship was another step in providing some financial relief for me as I started college, but receiving it meant more to me than a dollar amount.
Mr. Roosendaal exemplifies a servant heart, soul, and mind. In his years at SCS, he inspired others to do the same. He also showed a love of math and science that he instilled in many of his students. In my time at SCS, it was always a goal of mine to have a servant heart, soul, and mind.
When I was younger I preferred reading and writing to science and math, but during high school I grew to appreciate and enjoy math and science. The more I learned, the more I realized that through science and math, we can see the complexity, design, and beauty of God's creation.
I am currently a Health Sciences major at Whitworth University and hope to pursue a career in speech pathology. Receiving the scholarship gave me a stepping stone toward my future along with a sense of accomplishment and support from my alma mater. It was extremely humbling to know that my school family believed in me, and that they chose to help see me through this next step in my life. I plan to continue to work hard and make the SCS community proud of the person I am becoming. I hope to fully glorify God as I seek to humbly serve.
