Come See Us!
|
Saturday, May 7, 10am - 4pm: Reston Pet Fiesta, Reston Town Center.
We NEVER miss this fun event! There are vendors galore with loads of canine gear, food, and services. Best of all are the rescue groups, and we'll be right in the middle of things. We will try to have our current foster dogs there, along with lots of our own Shelties for petting, tricks, and treats. Come by and say "hello!" Information about how to get there and who will be there.
Sunday, May 15, noon - 4pm: Barrel Oak Winery, Delaplane VA.
We love our friends at Barrel Oak, and they love dogs. Stop by our tent before you go in for your tasting, and purchase a tasting ticket from us. We'll get a nice donation from "BOW." Wow! It's a fun place, especially on a beautiful May Sunday afternoon. Location and information.
Saturday, June 4, 10am - 2pm: Bark in the Park, Charles Town WV. Held in Jefferson Memorial Park, this is a family event for you and your canine friends. Join NVSR and the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County for a fun-filled day of events. Visit with vendors displaying a wide range of goodies available for purchase. There are lots of canine demonstrations and games, too. (The Shelties usually win!) More information.
June 6-18: Dog Wash Fundraiser at Weber's in Herndon VA. Wash your Sheltie (tell your friends to bring their dogs, too) and help NVSR at the same time. Weber's is an independent pet supply store, and this location is at 2599 John Milton Drive, Fox Mill shopping center. During these two weeks, NVSR receives $10 for every bath, every day.NVSR usually receives more than $600 from Weber's. So the more people who come bathe their dog(s) at this store, the more money we make. And we don't have to be there or wash any dogs!
Then on June 18, join NVSR volunteers and Shelties at this store. You're invited to enjoy some free petting and meet an available Sheltie. Some people still don't know that Shelties need rescuing, and they love hearing about what we do. Bring your doggie shopping list, too. Prices are better than Petco on some things, with good brands of food and treats. Directions to Weber's.

Here's a great story about that organization's beginnings, mission, and its future. We celebrate their success in making the lives of animals better.
For most folks, with spring comes their wish for the most beautiful green yard and garden on the block. Please be very careful with lawn chemicals, fertilizer, and mulch where your dogs run and play. Read this article about the dangers of using these products. And, here's another article about these dangers. Have you read about the latest opinion that dogs do not enjoy being hugged? If you've been paying attention to your dog's canine body language, you probably already know this. Some dogs do, but most do not like to be hugged. In the doggie world, this can be a threat and causes stress and anxiety. Humans are primates, and we like hugging. Dogs are canines with different signals. Read more about this ... Then, read more from another source ... British scientists have developed the first IQ test for dogs. OK, they didn't test Shelties, but they did test 68 border collies that were working dogs, not used to games and food treats. We think that our Shelties would also score high! Here's Anneka reading an issue of the Sheltie Spin.

Last Thought ...
| I used to look at my dog and say, "If you were a little smarter you could tell me what you're thinking."
But, he would look at me as if he were saying, "If you were a little smarter, I wouldn't have to." -- Fred Jungclaus
