You're Invited ... to the 2016 NVSR Picnic!

Saturday, September 19, 11:30am - 4pm
: NVSR Annual Picnic, Curtis Memorial Park, Hartwood VA

Put September 19 on your calendar right now and plan to come to our FABULOUS annual picnic and reunion. We always have a memorable time with lunch, games, contests, demonstrations, and much more. Shelties (and Sheltie wannabes) everywhere!

Last year, 175 two-legged and 120 four-legged attendees had a wonderful time celebrating NVSR's 15th anniversary.  This year ... our 16th year rescuing Shelties!!

Here's what we'll do at this year's picnic:
  • Free lunch! (noon to 1pm) and great dessert treats for sale
  • Silent auction - several VERY enticing things
  • Raffle with lots of fun things to win + 50/50 raffle
  • GAMES!  (we won't reveal what they are, so you can't practice!)
  • Photos of your Sheltie (and you?) that you can take home that day
  • Demonstrations: agility (and your Sheltie can try it), grooming, Sheltie nourishment and care, therapy dog work, how to train a challenging trick, nose work, and more
  • Foster Corral with all the current foster Shelties
  • Our ever-growing-longer Adopter Parade
  • And, the popular Sheltie Shop with lots of items for sale, including our brand-new 2016 calendar.

Same place - Curtis Memorial Park in Hartwood VA.  Here are the directions.  Look for us at the usual Shelter #7 - all the way at the end of the road. Bring a chair, bring your sense of fun, and bring your Sheltie(s)!  We look forward to seeing YOU there.

Here's the link.

Casper (NVSR 2008) is a committed therapy dog and a real favorite everywhere he visits.  Here's what his adopter, Kathe Conrad says:

"'Casper is the sweetest dog ever,' according to one of his fans at the Leewood Nursing home. Casper, along with other Fairfax Pets On Wheels (FPOW) and their human coaches, brighten the day of senior citizens here. Casper sees it as his way of 'giving back' for all that NVSR did to save his life back in 2008, plus he gets lots of attention and treats!" Casper even has his own trading card.

There are many opportunities to volunteer with FPOW, with or without your pet. Check out FPOW or call 703-324-5424.

If you walk your dog near a pond or other large body of standing water, be aware that pond scum can be harmful.  Something else to worry about this summer! Read more ...

The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) has completed a study of crash-worthiness of travel crates and carriers.  This is very important information for knowing how to keep our pets safe while they're in a vehicle.  The CPS study of seat belt harnesses is also worth reading, especially to see the videos of the "crashes" in the tests.  If you haven't already taken your dog's (and cat's) safety in the car seriously, you should check into these studies.  They will convince you.  Keep your Sheltie safe!

Sheltie summer fun!

Dog Treat of the Month
Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Treats

2 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
2 eggs
1/2 c. canned pumpkin
2 tblsp. peanut butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Add just enough water to make a dry, stiff dough. Roll out into a 1/2" thick roll. Slice into 1/2" pieces and put on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake 40 minutes at 350 degrees until hard.

Definitely worth doing a nice "sit" for.
Training Tips
Training your dog never ends.  Even "old dogs" can learn - and they love to.  Here are some links from Smart Dog University to encourage you to keep on training your Sheltie.

Here's a secret that dog trainers know and use that only a few dog owners take advantage of.  The power of "yes!"

Get the Poop Bag Ready!
We left this little piece to the end, and we hope you've finished your lunch before you read it.

Here's an interesting article about the "quality" of your dog's poop/stool/feces.  It's very important to look at what she leaves behind.  It's a good indicator of health.

On the humorous side, here's a "tale" from Mary Ellen Jones, NVSR volunteer, about that last "out" of the night.

"I took Emma out for her last potty of the evening.  Not wearing my glasses, I almost stepped in a small pile of poop that I'd apparently missed earlier in the day.

"I got the scooper and picked it up, then looked up to call Emma, but when I looked again, I (thankfully) noticed the pan was empty and I almost stepped in it again! I picked it up a second time, and must have twisted the pan, because it fell right out.  (Fate was determined that I should get this on the bottom of my shoe!)

"Getting annoyed, I scooped once more, very carefully this time, and kept the paddle on the pan to prevent the turd's rolling out.  As I quickly turned to dispose of it, imagine my exasperation as I watched the turd escape a third time--over the side of pan!  Feeling rather incompetent and
aggravated with myself, I went after the turd a fourth time with determination...and couldn't capture it!  Toads or turds, who can tell the difference in the dark and without glasses?"

The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.

Here's one of the best books about humans and dogs. It's not brand new, but human and canine body language haven't changed.

Do you ever wonder why your dog doesn't understand you? Maybe it's because YOU are a PRIMATE and SHE is a CANINE! Spend some fascinating time with this highly readable book and learn a LOT about how to communicate with your wonderful dog.

Keep in Touch!
We contact our adopters for updates on how their NVSR alumni are doing. You can send us news and photos any time ... please do!
