Come See Us!
|
October 12, noon-4pm: Barrel Oak Winery, Delaplane VA. Stop by our table and purchase your tasting ticket from us - we'll get a "cut" of the proceeds. Enjoy the sunshine on a mountainside along with great wine and Shelties! November 1, 11am-4pm: Home 4 the Holidays, Reston Town Center. This is one of our very favorite events. There are loads of exhibitors of canine interest, many rescue groups, and lots of humans and dogs. It's usually chilly, but our Shelties don't care - they come with their own personal cold weather gear. Stop by and say hello. Or come and help us talk about the Sheltie rescue mission with all the interested folks who stop by. Many of them have wonderful tales of growing up with a Sheltie. December 6, step off at 11am: Scottish Christmas Walk, Old Town Alexandria. We love to celebrate our Shelties' heritage with lots of other Scottish dog breeds. Come and march with us, even if you have a Sheltie wannabe. Or, come and cheer us on from the sidelines as the parade goes by. More information later as we get closer to the event.

Petey Saves the Day!
|
Our volunteer, Bill Parlock, reported to us recently about his morning walk with his Sheltie, Petey ..."I was walking Petey around the neighborhood very early Friday morning. As usual, I'm half asleep and Petey stopped in front of someone's house to take care of business. As I am reached down to pick up his (deposit) I noticed a flicker near the porch of that particular house. At first I thought it was a Halloween decoration, but the flicker quickly grew, and when the siding started melting it was time to wake up the house. Perhaps people can sleep through the doorbell and banging on the door, but a yapping Sheltie on your porch? No way. So the family got out - an infant and a toddler with the parents.
"On a happy note, the father (in boxers) had an industrial size fire extinguisher which knocked down the fire, which was growing pretty quickly. When I left, the firemen had just arrived. Petey had been "in the dog house" for shredding one of my T-shirts, but now I'm going to Petsmart to get him some of the good treats."
We agree with Bill - Petey rocks!

News and Notes

Looking for one of our e-newsletter articles or links from past issues? You can find them in the e-Spin archives.
Here's the link. Our friends at West Virginia Sheltie Rescue have a new cookbook just in time for holiday cooking. Lots of good recipes for 4-legged and 2-legged creatures who like to eat. $25 for the book and a Sheltie cookie cutter. The canine world is sad at the recent death of Dr. Sophia Yin. She was a strong advocate for positive training, low restraint of animals in stressful situations, and all manner of kind treatment of animals. She wrote knowledgeably about canines and other animals, and one of our favorite dog training books is Dr. Yin's: How to Behave so Your Dog Behaves. Her website is chock full of excellent advice on training and handling animals. She was a leader in the positive training area, refuting the former theories about dominance, including Cesar Millan's. Dr. Yin's influence on animal lovers the world over will remain her legacy. Here's a very interesting article from our friends at Your Dog's Friend non-profit training center in Rockville MD. It's all about how to help your dog this fall. Lots of great advice. Read on ... Did you know that there were Shelties in the rescue teams that helped search after the 9-11 attack? Look at this and watch for the Shelties! It's a 3 year old video, commemorating a decade after 9-11, but well worth watching again. H ere's a great Sheltie video - how to "cheat" on a workout on the treadmill. Ever wonder why your Sheltie circles before deciding where to poop? Maybe he's checking his internal compass. Read on ...

Dog Treat of the Month
|
Dried Sweet Potato Chips We've had many requests for this recipe, and it's so easy! Shelties love these natural, easy-to-do treats.
Sweet potatoes - as many as you want to cut up and dry. Slice them cross-wise into 1/4" slices. If you have a dehydrator, you're home free. Put the potato slices in there and dehydrate away. If you don't have one of those, put the slices on cookie sheets and into the oven at 250 degrees for 3 hours. Turn them over mid-way.
Cool the treats and pack them away to reward your dogs for just being beautiful Shelties! They'll want to try one right away.

Good Reading!
|
Here are two excellent books to help you understand our canine friends better. Turid Rugaas is a well-known Norwegian dog trainer, famous for her insights into canine behavior, language, and how we can communicate better with our canine friends. Put your feet up and learn about barking and other doggie "speech." There is a LOT we're missing! Both books are available from Dogwise.com.
