The 2013 Picnic was a smashing success!

We had a wonderful picnic this year, with record crowds of humans (190 of them) and canines (140 of them), mostly Shelties, of course.  We got our goodie bags and 2013 picnic bandanas, enjoyed lunch together, watched demos about grooming, therapy, massage, agility, had our photos taken at the PawPrints booth, bid on silent and live auction items, shopped at the Sheltie Shop, ate homemade goodies, petted the foster dogs, and marched proudly in the longer-than-ever adopter parade.

Waiting their turn for a photo
All together we brought in over $6,000 to help all our Shelties get healthy and find new homes.  We also gave Karin Trice an award for "Above and Beyond" care of permanent foster, Cody.  Cody enjoyed all the attention, too.

We want to thank all our donors of items for the auctions (click here for the full list).  We also
Petey watching the action
want to thank Jill Deming of Integrated Animal Therapies for the excellent massage advice.  Cody was especially appreciative!

And most of all, we thank all our hard-working volunteers, not just for putting on this fabulous event, but also for all they do to find the perfect home for each of "our Shelties."

There are lots more photos and videos on our website.  Here's the adopter parade - turn up the volume!

Keep Your Sheltie Safe at Hallowe'en
TrickOrTreat
You've probably seen this funny photo many times, but we still love it. Be careful around Hallowe'en, though. Many Shelties just aren't into the costumes, funny looking people and strange noises, and the door opening and closing so often. Be aware that YOUR Sheltie may be frightened by all the strange action. Give him or her a comfortable, safe place to hide away.  Here is more Hallowe'en advice.

Do you know how to give your dog an at-home health exam?  There are five things to do before you call your veterinarian about your sick dog
1. Take your dog's temperature
2. WRITE IT DOWN!
3. Check color and wetness of gums.
4. Check the capillary refill time.
5. Make sure you can describe any changes in your dog's demeanor, diet, and elimination pattern. Want more information about these?  Check the January 2012 issue of Whole Dog Journal.

Dog Treat of the Month
Crunchy Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

These are easy to make - only four ingredients you already have.

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup chunky peanut butter

1 cup milk

1. Preheat oven to 375 and lightly grease baking sheets.
2. Mix flour and baking powder in a bowl, then add milk and peanut butter. Mix until a dough forms.
3. Roll out the dough until it's 1/4 inch thick, then cut into shapes with a cookie cutter - or just into squares with a pizza cutter.

4. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Tip: For crispier biscuits, turn off the oven after 20 minutes and let them cool in there overnight.  Sit!  Good Girl!
