Is your dog a pro at pestering you? Nudging, jumping, mouthing, barking, whining whenever you need to get your own stuff done?

Teach your dog the "100 to none" rule. Instead of multi-tasking, give him your 100% attention when you play, pet, or love him up. Then, when you're finished, give him NONE. Be sure he has something to do (bone, chew toy, etc.) while you get back to your agenda. If he comes to pester you, give him the cold shoulder. Don't say NO or even give him eye contact. He doesn't exist.  A week or two of the silent treatment paired with the "best mom ever" playtimes and he'll be a pro at knowing when you're available and when you're off limits.

Dog Treat of the Month
Sorry, we didn't have time to find a new recipe this month.

Have you tried vegetables and fruit with your Sheltie?  Most of them love raw carrots, steamed veggies like green beans, broccoli, squash, kale. (No onions or garlic!) Try a piece of peach, apple, or banana. (No grapes or raisins!) A lot of dogs will sniff, take it, drop it on the floor, sniff some more, lick it, pick it up, eat it, look surprised, then ask for more.  These are low-calorie treats that you can use for training or just for fun.  Add some to your dog's food bowl, especially if she's overweight.  It's a great way to add bulk to her diet without the calories.  Then, you both go out for a long walk!

By the way, did you know that stainless steel is the best dog dish for food or water.  It's easiest to keep clean and does not allow bacteria to grow in the tiny cracks you find in plastic.  And, it doesn't break.

If you have a recipe or idea you'd like to share with your Sheltie friends, please send it to us.

Old Dogs Remembered, edited by Bud Johns

Tissue Alert!  Get out the box of tissues and settle in to read lots of wonderful tributes to memorable dogs.  We love our dogs so much when they're with us and perhaps even more after they're gone and we realize how much they have added to our lives.  This book is a collection of heartfelt, thoughtful, and often funny, essays and poems about well-loved dogs written by James Thurber, Molly Ivins, John Galsworthy, Daniel Pinkwater, John Cheever, and many others.  You may not think so at first, but you'll love it!
